Attendance

I agree attendance is not an issue for now. This same game drew 10.2K fans last year- but that was on a Saturday and PC was ranked. 11.8K on a weekday is a nice improvement and about as expected.

Chants by opposing teams aren't a big deal, the Johnnies even had some at Villanova last week. Would like to see us attempt to shut them down but I wasn't there so not sure if that happened (I didn't hear any PC chants on TV). Chants by St. John's fans have been pretty poor for as long as I've been a fan (early Lavin years). Almost no originality or traditions, but now's the perfect time to start some. It's really tough for that to happen without becoming a winner and St. John's is just now starting to become one.

I know people clown those chant sheets some schools provide their fans/students, but for a school like St. John's I wouldn't mind a jumpstart. Have to start somewhere.

PC is the most likable BE opponent we'll play there, and IMO it's tougher for the average fan to get hyped about a team we're supposed to beat. I still believe fans/crowds will be much bigger and more energized for the rest of our MSG games this season, but we'll see.
Attendance #s are very deceptive and not same as paid attendance

So are you saying St. John's gave away free tickets for this game, and if so how many? I know they did that some during Mullin's final season, for police officers at some games (I've donated some of those as recently as a year or two ago), etc.

Cannot disclise but we comp to various charitable orgs and servicemen, etc. which is a great thing and very quietly doing great stuff with unsold tix (in addition to.plsyers fams, former players etc).
Also bump in prov attendance were msg suites which go through a diff channel than individual ticket sales.

If attendance keeps climbing there would be less unsold tix to give away obviously

That's a really great thing you are doing. Can you explain for others how you can donate tix?

For arena...Concessions, parking, merch etc.. matter too....total revenue not just ticket sales $$

Assume we were doing that last year too then (actually I know since I had bought some- though those weren't for the PC game). Understand you can't give out numbers but it's tough to compare year over year without knowing if we've increased/decreased the number of donated tickets YoY.

Yes St. John's sends me emails about it, last one appears to be from 2022 for a 2023 game. Part of the email receipt copied below:

Unsure why the date listed is March 31 but it was for an MSG game last year. Tickets were $5 each so I bought a bunch.

He has so much pull, they are going to stop selling French fries in cups or trays and replace with spaghetti
Spaghetti a little messy for the games although if I wear a red sweatshirt who will notice if I sling some sauce on myself. mjmaherjr pre game appetizer/pasta of choice would be Mac and cheese ( the baked solid with tons of cheese type ) when I'm not rushed and main course pasta during game just give me something simple and easy to handle cheese ravioli in a st johns red sauce

Here's the link BTW (it was for the Georgetown game on 1/29/23- and says in 2022 they gave away 3K tickets):

Can't find a link in my email or online for anything this year. Unsure if they're still doing this but if anyone has a link please send it.

I don't know what the school does to encourage or incentivize or bring current students or recent alumni to games, but efforts in those regards should be emphasized to fill sections on both ends. Like running buses from campus directly to msg or to the lirr in Jamaica with a subsidized train ticket. That'd also help move visiting fans to the 200 level.

I'm not saying this to offend anyone, but it was very apparent that the average age of STJ fans was much higher than Providence fans.
I resemble that remark. The stock markets at record highs, construction is everywhere, pricey a$$ restaurants like Maher goes to are packed mid week, Taylor Swift gets $2000 a ticket and the Knicks, Rangers and Islanders sell out every night. The economy is booming and the haves are flush with disposable cash. IF we can stay on this upward trajectory it will all happen sooner than later.

Not sure of the purpose of this thread. Most of the people posting here are long time fans. Pretty obvious that most go to games throughout the season. (All or at least some games) So this message of “get out to the games“ is in an echo chamber. Most people here were miserable but STILL going to games when Norm Roberts was mucking things up. As they did with Mahoney, Fraschilla, Jarvis, Mullin, Anderson. Did I name all the Coaches?

Let‘s be honest the average age demographic on this site is roughly between 50-70. We were headed in the direction of most of us being dead before things turned around. We probably should do a membership drive like Ralph Kramden in the Honeymooners to raise our numbers like the Racoon Lodge. Maybe put a Redfans table outside the UC if it still exists! 😂

All kidding aside, this is the “damage” the University did years ago when they refused to listen to those who told them that the identity of the University was supported by a basketball team.Father Shanley seems to understand this. 30 years late is better than never. Now, Blaming the fans aka the paying customer is sheer folly and bad business. All water under the bridge now.

The only question left is how do we fix it? Time and some sustained winning would be a good idea. Hiring a great Coach is an awesome start. However, Rome was not rebuilt in a day. Ok, maybe Rome was never rebuilt but I think you get it. This is going to be a process. Probably need a real Conference or Tournament run. People have been fooled and let down so many times. It can be done but It’s not going to be easy. We can’t waive a magic wand and fill the building without some “winning”.
