Attendance

Was at the game, and in a section where the "back areas" around me had much of the Friar faithful.

I don't think there was that many of them, and they were quite the entire first half because of how hot we started and because we were up by so much.

They got loud during the early second half run. Our fans were quiet much of the first half because we were dismantling them. Then our fans across the arena got loud once we came back after the first of the two Providence second half runs.
I was row 7 in sec 114... i didnt realize it until the 2nd half - but when the Friars came back... sounded like we were at the AMP.

I look around... couple rows of Friar fans in 115 and 113... maybe thats why it sounded so loud for them...

Yeah as mentioned I wasn't at the game and it sounded as I expected on TV, though some of you in attendance expected it be to louder which is fair since what you heard is different from what I did. These older paying fans are still very beneficial to our fan base, but my main point was any specifics about individuals should be off-limits.

I think out of all the BE teams we'll face at MSG, PC is the least exciting. No ranking (Creighton, others), not a National Champion (UConn, Nova, Marq, GTown), generally a civil fanbase, etc. That combined with it being on a weeknight, I wasn't expecting too loud of a crowd. I'd be very surprised if people aren't more excited for the rest of our MSG games. It'll happen.

I didn't see any redmen fantasy football winning beer flowing back to row 20 and 21 in 114 :)

I was in section 114, row 12.

When it comes to MSG games the expectations of crowd composition needs to be lowered. The northeastern Catholic schools are serious destinations for many Metro area students, and as I said above a large percentage return to the NYC area after college. On top of that MSG is located literally where Amtrak is and walking distance to the Port Authority. Unless SJU has 19,000 season ticket holders it’s reasonable to expect a graduate of one of these programs, or a diehard local (their own locality because of the commutation ease) to scoop up some tickets for their one Big East game in NYC. And if SJU had 19,000 season ticket holders they need to all be either available or willing to eat their ticket costs as you don’t know who is buying from you on the secondary market.

But I think that’s what makes MSG special and unique. One side gets loud and then its up to the other side to get loud. When Mullins teams somehow beat Syracuse at MSG and another year Duke, the back in forth in the crowd was awesome.

Now it does create less of a home court advantage but as many have pointed out it’s also a recruiting advantage. Not many kids talk about Carnesecca Arena when they commit. Or the Prudential Center. You get one, and you get the other and it’s not impossible to make it work.

I would not play 18 games there, though, and I think Rick is a quick learner and is figuring that out.

21 degrees with snow. Maybe I should've consulted with you before we got tickets this morning.
I consult with Weatherman before I even drive to work some days. Heck one time he called me mid day when I was in the office and told me to go home immediately because there was some sudden snow squall coming and he saved me like a 3 hour traffic mess and I got home in 30 minutes

But originally you said you received a text from God alerting you of the bad weather. You kept mentioning something about how even heaven appreciates elitists.

Some perspective. Average attendance for national champion UCONN last year was 11,446. Villanova last year averaged 9,931.
Gampel Pavilion on the Uconn campus seats a little over 10,000. The XL center in Hartford is 16,000. They usually play 8-10 games at Gampel per season.

This program is the best positioned it has been in several decades but some fans will always find something to be negative about or worry about. Attendance could be better, and will get better if we continue winning, but 11.8K is solid (especially historically for this program).

To reiterate an earlier point, back to back Empire Classic games this season featuring the National Champions:
UConn vs. Indiana (MSG): 17,647 (Sunday afternoon)
UConn vs. #15 Texas (MSG): 10,988 (Monday night)

No need to call out older people who've spent a lot of money and time carrying our fanbase for decades despite no results. The cheering from any individuals is NOT going to determine the outcome of games in a crowd of nearly 12K. Simply buying tickets is massively beneficial for the school, and the more people who buy the louder it'll get.

Rather than calling out individuals who don't cheer, if anything the school or a group of fans need to be a little creative in terms of coming up with chants and such and making those traditions, or we just need to be patient and it'll happen organically. Many top programs have strong traditions which resulted from winning, and what we saw from the Lacrosse team yesterday is a step in the right direction.

Everything is going well, this isn't the same Johnnies program that previously was destined to fail. Enjoy the ride.
Great post.

Would also help to just have the Lax team at every game. Made a big difference and a constant presence like that would really help

My section was better than I've heard it in years, but seemed to have fewer providence fans than others

One negative is the start time of noon. folks are going out on Friday night and will need to cut down on consumption ot they will still be in bed at noon.

Also the thought of hot dogs at start time is YUK. Need to have bagels, donuts. egg sandwiches and bloody maries/screw drivers at concession stands.

An egg cheese with mortadella on a roll would be perfect

Noon start is perfect for me. Gets me home just in time for my late afternoon nap
