Attendance

Friar fans were definitely more engaged most of the game. I think it was a closer split than some think, although there were more STJ fans.

I'm not saying this to offend anyone, but it was very apparent that the average age of STJ fans was much higher than Providence fans. It is good that those fans are showing up. I'm not saying it's bad they are. But I AM saying, students and young alumni need to show up in better numbers.
There will be a public execution of SJ fans over 70 today who have supported program since ball had laces to thin out the herd. I am go into hiding. 😇

Although there was certainly a sea of red, I do agree that the average PC fan there was very vocal and more in the 20s 30s range. That said, overheard with about 5 mins left, one 25-30 yr old Johnnie’s fan said to his friends “we’ve gotta buy tickets to the next game too”…all who went felt the electricity that those of us who remember the 80s and 90s and occasionally teams post 2000 knew as a staple. It’s going to keep building. Im very optimistic for a near sell out for Villanova - and yes many will be Nova fans but it’s going to be old school electric that night.

I'm one of those. I had a great time, even going by myself.

This morning I started a group thread with friends, and six of us are going to Marquette next Saturday. One person in the chat said they were about to text all of us. It's building!

I looked just now. St. John's @ Creighton is not sold out. Their non-resale price cheap ticket to get in is $22, and their cheapest resale price to get in is $6. Obviously Omaha is very different expenses-wise, but that's a huge difference.
Creighton at one point was doing $1 beer, which I'm sure didn't hurt attendance. Not sure if they'll do that on a Saturday at 1 pm, but you never know.

It seems to me alot of our fans season ticket holders sell some of there tickets for the better games. Villanova, UConn, Providence and

use to be Georgetown. I sit in a row of 17 seats, pretty sure all season ticket holders. Last night only 4 St John’s fans out of

the 17 ? My wife a St John’s graduate said that shouldn’t be allowed She’s right but impossible to stop I think.

Are they selling there tickets to supplement purchase ? I tried to be as obnoxious as possible sitting in the middle of them, almost ate a

little crow at the end of the game. Thank God and Pitino for the win

Maybe, but I think a lot of season ticket holders simply can't make it to all of the games.

This program is the best positioned it has been in several decades but some fans will always find something to be negative about or worry about. Attendance could be better, and will get better if we continue winning, but 11.8K is solid (especially historically for this program).

To reiterate an earlier point, back to back Empire Classic games this season featuring the National Champions:
UConn vs. Indiana (MSG): 17,647 (Sunday afternoon)
UConn vs. #15 Texas (MSG): 10,988 (Monday night)

No need to call out older people who've spent a lot of money and time carrying our fanbase for decades despite no results. The cheering from any individuals is NOT going to determine the outcome of games in a crowd of nearly 12K. Simply buying tickets is massively beneficial for the school, and the more people who buy the louder it'll get.

Rather than calling out individuals who don't cheer, if anything the school or a group of fans need to be a little creative in terms of coming up with chants and such and making those traditions, or we just need to be patient and it'll happen organically. Many top programs have strong traditions which resulted from winning, and what we saw from the Lacrosse team yesterday is a step in the right direction.

Everything is going well, this isn't the same Johnnies program that previously was destined to fail. Enjoy the ride.

Kinda get your point on the attendance but disagree about the cheering. No one is really pointing at any particular individual but it's collectively a huge group. If you have already made it a point to get to the game a simple " Let's go Johnnies " cheering by most of the people would make a difference. That chant has been going around forever or at least since we lost the Redmen name

It's not like the group hasn't done it before that place would rock with that cheer and I'm not even going back 20+ years ago and people don't have to get out of their seat to do it but if it's done by the majority it is very noticeable in a positive way

And it's doable. The St Johns contingent in Charleston maybe 500 ? Was louder than our fans last night

This is sad. St johns is playing great and 75% of the twitter talk is whining about attendance.

Be excited that we have an awesome team that is tournament bound. Stop talking about attendance. It is not somehting fans should be concerned about.

It just goes to show our own fans are dying to be negative about St johns.

Were you at the game? I'm not saying this in any confrontational way, to be clear. Apologize in advance if it comes off that way.

It was honestly a weird home atmosphere. I completely understand why people (like myself) are a little absorbed about it. I'm also not worried about it, I do think the Marquette game will be better attended by students and much louder.

Pitino himself has called out our fanbase by trying to schedule UConn at CA. SJU is doing their part. But let's keep making excuses, that's been the MO this century.

I get for most people it's more a general sentiment, but personally I think any specifics about fans should be off limits. I've even seen several Twitter posts this season taking actual pictures of the backs of people. Anger at a coach, refs, etc. is fair game but not individuals who pay the school and venue to be there in support of their team.

Also those fans not cheering are mostly old and experienced, it's not like they'll change just because people post about it online. From my TV it sounded very loud the end of the second half, and we won the game. If the team plays well it'll be loud, simple as that. The better we play over the course of the season the more packed and louder it'll get. It'll happen organically. 100% guarantee the UConn game will be an absolute madhouse if the game is competitive.

I was not being negative with my opinion just stating a fact. My wife and I had a great time, especially since we won.

I agree100 percent with other posters who post if we win they will come. We also have the advantage that we can only go

up since we have been down for so long. With Rick and his staff St John’s Basketball is headed for great times. Wait till

we get some 5 star local talent, which is coming. Than that will be another shot in the arm. Go St John’s !

I'm not on twitter so I have no clue about the picture thing but all I can say about the crowd last night is we weren't just talking about it in 114 guys who were there like Sir Eric and some others who sit in entirely different areas can verify we were all texting about it together at points during the game. The crowd collectively didn't get loud till I think it was a Soriano dunk with several minutes left

The guys from this site cheer loud because everyone loses their voices and I have friends on the other St Johns groups like Tom's Facebook group and some of the twitter crew they all go nuts like us but collectively as an arena of St Johns fans was bad showing cheering wise till the end when you have Providence fans who maybe 1/3 of the Arena were way louder regardless of age

And again going back to Charleston that group of St Johns fans there was beyond tremendous and made their presence known

Not a knock on any particular age group but for some reason this year as a collective group we haven't been loud. We have in the past and we should be now. Its odd to me why. The garden sounded like we were in providence a few times yesterday. Only at the end did it really sound like we came alive. There were a few instances that place should have been rocking from a st johns standpoint.

Pitino also said in last night’s post game presser that while the team deserves bigger crowds, he knows it takes time.

I cannot believe we are still harping in this (even though Zach did bring it up again as one of his points). Not directing that at you. This is a general statement.

Was at the game, and in a section where the "back areas" around me had much of the Friar faithful.

I don't think there was that many of them, and they were quite the entire first half because of how hot we started and because we were up by so much.

They got loud during the early second half run. Our fans were quiet much of the first half because we were dismantling them. Then our fans across the arena got loud once we came back after the first of the two Providence second half runs.
