Attendance

It also helps that Dayton charges 10 bucks a ticket and season ticket plans more than half what sju charges

Is that for all tickets or just the Section 400 upper deck seats ?

I think that's just for the 400 section which is all they have left right now.

But Dayton is a college hoops town and they support their team and the game in general like crazy. That is why the Play-In games (aka the new "First Round" of the NCAA tournament) is committed to Dayton for the foreseeable future.

ten bucks for the nose bleeds is fair. it's 30 dollars now...60 dollars if you don't go alone. that's a tough sell.

I'm willing to bet with even lower prices our piss poor fan base won't exactly pack the joint or travel to watch the team play.

Disagree.
Whenever i go out after the game, people on the street immediately how the team did.
A win is always greeted by a smile and thumbs up.
People in the city like STJ.
The waiters, the cops, everyone wants to see them do well.
They just need a reason to go to the games.
2 years ago proved they'll go if we win.

Only game that drives that point home was Pitt. The Uconn and Duke games had a very high number of their fans or non STJ fans in the Duke case where its casual hoops fans. Upwards of 40-50%. Plus we all know Cuse.

I'm extremely down on our fan base right now. The more I watch college hoops the more I see a whole different dynamic with our fans.

We werent playing well going into the duke game but still it shouldnt matter, and plus Duke is Duke their on TV more than leave it to beaver reruns.
I remember later in that year when we had that great win at NOVA people on this board were saying how well we traveled, albeit it philly. So there is hope that our fans will come see us play, home or away, if we are winning.

Thats because Ed from Sly Fox organized a bus trip which pretty much put 75 fannies in the seats (myself included). Plus Philly is not really a trip per se. I was just surprised to see Charleston flooded with Dayton fans who went to ALL the games regardless of their team playing and the fact is Dayton to Charleston is not easy trip.

Truth is, attendance is also affected by business decisions, and SJU continues to be a mom and pop shop in this regard.

Other teams contract out their ticket sales to marketing firms who make commission on sales. We still rely on "in-bound" ticket sales; aka people calling the ticket office and saying "Hi, I'd like 2 tickets to the Florida Gulf Coast game".

Other college sports programs hire ticket consultants who specialize in outreach, they follow sales leads and use demographic data to reach potential ticket purchasers.

Selling tickets is a business, and unfourtunately SJU treats it like a HS homecoming.

Interesting insight...amazing that they don't follow suit...

As others have said, winning cures all. In 2000 when we were doing really well, prominent figures like Jay-Z, and Nas wore SJ apparel and attendance I assume was way better than it is now. It starts with the team success, then the fans come. Not fans first, then the team gets better. Unfortunately, diehards like those on this board are few and far in between. Most fans are front runners and will only come out when the team is ranked or a serious factor knocking off top teams (2011). Let's concentrate on what will cause the fans to come out, not the fans themselves.

No doubt that St. John's is the ONLY program truly embraced by NYC once we are winning full force. If we become a top twenty program, people will be talking about us on the train, in bars, around the water cooler. People will know you have season tix, and ask you about the game. Interest in SJU bball at its best rises to the major pro sport level, above that of hockey, and depending on how good the Knicks or Nets are, can approach that level. While there are considerable numbers of Syracuse and UCONN fans in the city, fan interest when SJU has a strong program dwarfs them. While those programs ahve their fans, when SJU wins, the entire city adopts us. When that happens, when you beat a Pitt in the last second in front of a national audience, you know that single game was worth the price of a season ticket, not to mention that you get a 6 or 7 great games on the schedule.

ten bucks for the nose bleeds is fair. it's 30 dollars now...60 dollars if you don't go alone. that's a tough sell.

Believe it or not, 2 weeks ago I saw the LA Clippers play the hawks at the staples center with tix bought for $5 on stubhub the day before. I think the face vlaue on the ticket was 10 or 15 bucks - and that's a pretty good team with Blake Griffin and Chris Paul in LA no less.

One observation about the attendance and our team.

I went to the Florida Gulf Coast game last week and the first half of the game you could hear a pin drop, not a single person was into it, for a while i felt like i was the only one cheering for our team, towards the end of the first half some of the crowd finally started getting into it and what do you know we started playing better and tied the game (see where im going with this)

our players perform better when the crowd is behind them, the crow is such a large part of the team and the game people don't even realize that sitting there with a blank stare on their face showing now emotion and being completely silent is hurting us.

further more who goes to a game to be silent and look like the are having the most miserable time in the world?? stay home for that, the game is supposed to be emotional and exciting for fans as well. you can yell at the tv at home but when your at the game you are worried about what the people around you are doing and what they think of you?

I would also like to point out that alcohol sales at carnessecca arena would help this issue. enough with this puritan dry campus bs, bring the ratskeller back to campus.

No doubt alcohol sales would help! I've been to my share of games both this year and last year and something I've noticed this year at CA is that students seem to be almost embarrassed to cheer. There are a few students who will try to start "DE-FENSE" or "Let's go Johnnies" chants, but often only 1 or 2 more people will join in then it dies from there. After seeing that no one joined the cheer, no one else wants to start one because they think they will sound like an idiot chanting all alone. The atmosphere should be one where no one is embarrassed or ashamed to cheer for SJ. Many people support the team, but are not vocal about it thus the dull atmosphere. I was actually embarrassed that Lavin did not receive a larger applause when he came back at Midnight Madness. I stood up with a few other guys cheering loudly to show some respect hoping others would do the same, but they remained seated and not clapping. There are many fairweather fans who like to go to games just to have something to do but aren't really invested, then there are the diehards like on here and Jungle who go the extra mile to support the team whether that be buying season tickets, making trips to SC, and truly follow every step of the team.

I know its a rant on my end but I brought people that didnt go to this school and they were looking at me like what is wrong with your fans why are they so quiet, and then they ended up joining in on cheering with me because the silence was so awkward.

We also dont really have any traditional songs or chants which bothers me too.

"Urban planning: Existing alongside NFL"
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/story?columnist=maisel_ivan&id=6676377

"The traditional method of selling tickets by athletic departments has been "inbound," that is, customers come to the school. In other words, market outreach consisted of unlocking the door to the ticket office at 9 a.m. every weekday and waiting for the market to come to them. In a metropolitan area with many entertainment options, that added up to standing still in a sprint."

"The Georgia Tech AD read a story in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution about how a former executive with the Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta Thrashers, Bernie Mullin, had started a company, Aspire, to telemarket ticket sales and had done wonders for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Hogan called Mullin, and Georgia Tech soon hired Aspire.

The company installed 14 sales agents in the athletic department. They call -- and call and call -- from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. In two years, Aspire has generated $2.5 million in new season-ticket revenue. Aspire's commission is 34 percent. That's a healthy cut, but Hogan said Georgia Tech couldn't be happier."

http://sports.espn.go.com/boston/news/story?id=6699782
"The BC athletic director also has hired a staff -- headed by a former employee of the Detroit Lions, Greg Lynch -- dedicated to selling season, group and single-game tickets. That move was in direct response to declines in attendance despite the team's continued success."

These are the things you need to do to compete in the sports/entertainment market in a major city.

I remember losing my voice at Marist Women's games...we even had a well-known fight song you could easily follow, and the place was LOUD! I always assumed SJ would have a rabid and crazy atmosphere since the team is very well-known in the Big East...I was wrong. What hurt me the most was going to the Cuse game last year at the Garden...I took the LIRR and every stop I saw SJ ads at the stations, yet for every 1 or 2 SJ fans there were 5 Cuse fans. Long Island is supposed to be SJ's home turf, not Cuse. Yes there are tons of Cuse alumni from the area, but you would think SJ still gets at least comprises say 40% of the Garden crowd. Using a quick eye check, I would estimate the crowd was 90% Cuse fans 10% SJ. I literally sat in an area where I was the only SJ fan for rows and rows. Unfortunately though until we really start winning again against nationally ranked teams this will remain the case.

When I go to a game i expect to wake up the next morning with a hoarse voice, weather we win or loose ( i prefer to win) but at least I know i had a good time and the money i spent was well worth it.

The school shouldn't have to sell alcohol in order to attract fans. There are plenty of dry campuses that draw a full house game after game. The problem is that the students who go to St. John's don't care about the basketball program. Anybody who was at the FGC game could see there wasn't even a student section.

You do realize that the FGCU games was in the middle of Thanksgiving break. Students have not been a problem for Carnesseca games recently. Garden games are a different story.
