Attendance

Those who were growing up when Namath won in 69 with the Jets, the 69 and 86 Mets, the 72 Knicks, etc. have a totally different view of those teams than guys my age. The same goes for SJ hoops. The closest I get to those days is hearing my uncles talk about how SJ used to be amazing and coming on here reading about it. Just making the NCAA tournament has been nearly impossible for SJ many years recently let alone being ranked or a real factor in the Big East. When the culture of winning returns and we expect to be ranked and/or make the tourney each year, there will be sellouts. It also has to do with the opponent. If we have a chance to upset a big time opponent like Cuse, UConn, G'Town, etc. it will be much more hyped up.

Will you stop your stupid ageist mentality once and for all. Most of the time when you open your mouth, dumb stuff comes pouring out. Time and time again, you rail about your generation having the answers, and how older posters on this board knowing nothing, or mired in ideas of the past. Stupidity has no age bias, and certainly there are plenty of posts, by young and old, that prove that point. I have children your age, and thankfully, they can express themselves in professional and social circumstnaces without thinking or communicating that they are superior because of their youth. Quite the opposite, they know their understanding of the world is bound by their limited experiences and they respect those who have lived through world events, and not read them in a book.

However wisdom tends to favor those with experience, and until you learn that you will be hopelessly ignorant of the fact that there are people who have been around a little longer that know a little more than you. Certainly, as you sit on your computer and watch games on your 13 inch computer screen, you are missing nuances that those of us who are there observe when the camera focuses on the ball.

This isn't a scathing attack on you, but maybe a wakeup call for someone like you, who more than likely will sleep right through it.

What is wrong with you? I hope this is a joke. I think more people are beginning to wake up to the fact that I am targeted for no reason by people like you. How the hell do you interpret my post as a younger age superiority complex? I would give my left nut just to see one of my favorite teams win a ring. Before I was born, the Jets won 1, the Mets won 2, the Islanders won 4, the Knicks won 1, etc. Those teams have been terrible in my lifetime and I was saying that SJ followed suit and that's one of the reasons the stands aren't sold out. This is easily a top 10 dumbest post ever.

I use the term loosely, my whole family is full of alums that are familiar with the players and coaches and may get a game on tv here or there I just dont understand why they dont take adavntage of living 10 mins away from SJU. If I lived in NY I woulod make almost every game.

And that's it in a nutshell, STJ students aren't as engaged with their school and athletic programs as students at large residential universities, where there is admittedly far less going on in the region to entertain you, and STJ alums appear to be even less so.

Throw in how difficult it is for city dwellers to get to campus and that hurts attendance too. When I was a season ticket holder it was only for the Garden back when they had those packages, I lived in Brooklyn and then Westchester and only made it to campus for a couple of games (also the only times I was ever on STJ campus) in 10 years but I never missed a game at the garden if I was in NY. I can remember trudging home through many snow storms after games. :cheer:

I remember two years ago when we beat Pitt at the garden, the place was packed, we just need a few signature wins and maybe some top 25 votes to fill the seats again. I have a family full of St Johns fans that live so close to Alumni Hall and they still don't go to games because they don't follow closely enough.

I was there. Hardy's game winner on the baseline.

Incredible atmosphere in MSG that day.

I re-read your post and had misinterpreted it. I'm deleting my post. sorry

Just for giggles. I looked at the attendance for all the teams that played yesterday, and nobody had great attendance. ND had about 6k, Georgetown had 7k. I believe Maryland had a good turn out at 10k. A lot depends obviously on who one is playing as in Duke vs Louisiville. Many matchups had far less than the 4k that we had at the game!
I think I noticed Dayton box score because they played Manhattan. Att 11,500. They lost their coach, don't believe they were much good last year, play in A10 and draw great. I know there is some history there and they sure do love their team. Seeing what schools like Creighton, the rest of the MVC, other schools that are called mid-majors draw and I wonder if they really love rooting for their team, or flat out love college hoops.

They had 1000 fans who made the trip to Charleston. Affirmed my belief that I would include them in my basketball only conference.

That was like the old days when he made that shot. Pitt had a last desperation shot/throw at the basket that was nowhere near the hoop. I recall one of the Pitt players taking the ball and slamming it down as he walked off the court. It was beautiful LOL

If I'm correct, they've been fairly decent of late (I know they fielded a some NCAA and NIT teams a few years ago).

Very underrated program. Jim O'Brien, Oliver Purnell, Brian Gregory.
Just google image their arena. 13,000 seats. STJ fans would salivate over a bldg like that.

I thought the crowd last night was pretty good. If school was in session and it wasn't Thanksgiving break I think it would have been a lot louder.
I agree

Agreed, although it was mostly alums it was still pretty full. I'd say 75-80% full.

Even Andray Blatche was sitting courtside, very odd lol.

Creighton has been ranked, constantly making tourney's, and has a Wooden candidate. Not a great comparison to us.

It also helps that Dayton charges 10 bucks a ticket and season ticket plans more than half what sju charges

I'm willing to bet with even lower prices our piss poor fan base won't exactly pack the joint or travel to watch the team play.

Disagree.
Whenever i go out after the game, people on the street immediately how the team did.
A win is always greeted by a smile and thumbs up.
People in the city like STJ.
The waiters, the cops, everyone wants to see them do well.
They just need a reason to go to the games.
2 years ago proved they'll go if we win.

Only game that drives that point home was Pitt. The Uconn and Duke games had a very high number of their fans or non STJ fans in the Duke case where its casual hoops fans. Upwards of 40-50%. Plus we all know Cuse.

I'm extremely down on our fan base right now. The more I watch college hoops the more I see a whole different dynamic with our fans.

The attendance was decent. I felt the crowd was dead. I also felt the band was dead, there was a timeout that went for two minutes and they didn't play anything. Found it odd

Truth is, attendance is also affected by business decisions, and SJU continues to be a mom and pop shop in this regard.

Other teams contract out their ticket sales to marketing firms who make commission on sales. We still rely on "in-bound" ticket sales; aka people calling the ticket office and saying "Hi, I'd like 2 tickets to the Florida Gulf Coast game".

Other college sports programs hire ticket consultants who specialize in outreach, they follow sales leads and use demographic data to reach potential ticket purchasers.

Selling tickets is a business, and unfourtunately SJU treats it like a HS homecoming.

We werent playing well going into the duke game but still it shouldnt matter, and plus Duke is Duke their on TV more than leave it to beaver reruns.
I remember later in that year when we had that great win at NOVA people on this board were saying how well we traveled, albeit it philly. So there is hope that our fans will come see us play, home or away, if we are winning.
