Asst coach discussion

All signs pointing to DeMeo. No announcement this week as BE meetings taking place and the holiday weekend.

Remember different summer recruiting schedule this year with all the reforms and changes. Use to be all in July now 8 days of Evaluation Days in June along with various days in July.

Thanks Fordham
That would make me very happy
We would have the best overall staff that we've had in many years

I understand that this staff is 0-0 in terms of Ws/Ls which is the most critical metric, but based on both experience and career accomplishments, measuring from top-to-bottom, inside-to-out, and upside-to-down, this group seems to have few parallels in St. John’s history.
Nobody but the shadow knows, but things are looking up for St. John’s.

When Monte finds out a fellow Paisan is on our bench this is his reaction with his season ticket renewal :)

LOL!!!

Just out of curiosity does anyone know around the salary the coaches usually make at St. John's?

I know details of CMA's contract here was never released here.

At Arkansas I know CMA made 2.5 million, his associate head coach made 390K, and his assistants made 250k and 200k.

Anyone have any estimates on what the new staff will make?

Not an insider, but I believe last two head coaches were making $2 million. I really can't picture the school going up to $2.5, so maybe they met halfway at $2.25. I don't think Anderson was expecting any $2.5 million job to pop up so late, so maybe he was willing to go down in price.

The total assistant salaries won't be any problem to cover. Matt A. got a big raise after word spread about LSU "interest." I'm not even sure if he was third or fourth assistant, but he was making much more than $250/$200.

There are a couple guys here who I suspect have moles deep inside the school, so they could probably shed some light on it.

Cragg and Iron Mike look to be running a real tight ship right now. I’m preparing for a lot less news flow from them unless Van or Demeo start telling local scribes info

Our best seasons were with coaches who had last names ending in a vowel. Carnesecca, Fraschilla (although he was only half Italian), and assistants like LoBalbo.

Anderson knows it is wise to buy a vowel in NYC.

In the age of social media it really is amazing nothing seems to leak so far. On one hand it's a good thing, because it comes off as more professional and clearly everyone is on the same page. On the other, it provides less BS fodder for boards like this lol. I don't know anything about DeMeo...just curious what makes him a better contact for HS recruits in the NYC area when Borman is literally in the NY Rens program and could directly push kids our way?

St.John’s is far less of a “Mom and Pop” organization under AD Cragg.

Not sure that Borman assumption re: “directly pushing kids” here is a lock. It is more complicated than that.

Anytime you pull from a prominent HS or AAU program you run the risk of pissing off the others. Pretty much it's a certainty like death and taxes.

I like Borman as he hasn't rested on his connections and has done well for himself. But his two most prominent players are Kuminga and Cisse. Kuminga is a 1 and done if they even have the NBA rule in place. Who knows if he wants to get cute and try another route for a year maybe like others have done. Cisse has supposedly left the Rens. So then we're bringing him on to hand deliver who exactly? He coached Tabor before. Fine but 1. I'm not that big into Tabor and 2. we got him before without Borman.

Demeo has been around for awhile. He's coached and recruited NYC players at Hofstra, Iona, and Providence as well as thru his JUCO team now.

The new regime puts a lot of pressure on Paultzman to get us readers the inside info. I'm sure he's up to the task.

Agree here. The help that Borman can offer us limited as he can’t just bring players not over right away. In addition, those benefits decrease over the years. This isn’t the “old days” with Riverside Church. Better idea is to keep a good relationship with Borman amongst our staff and hire assistants who have good connections and good resume’s on their own. I’m not saying that Borman doesn’t, but he isn’t going to be a quick fix for us in any way. Demeo still young and well travelled as a coach. He can help in many facets and I think having several guys like that on staff really increase the overall staff value to the program and the head coach.

I think we’ve seen how things have gone grabbing staff with very limited scope of responsibilities and skill sets ie. “Skills guy”, recruiter solely etc. People here should be thrilled that our HC is hiring assistants that are multifaceted coaches AND recruiters and we shouldn’t be hamstrung by deficiencies at all with respect to our staff.

Let’s face it. Guys like Demeo and Van Macon would have been great and probably better options to hire instead of Mike Rice at the time there was talk about Mullin hiring somebody. We’d be extremely well prepared with these guys as our 2nd/3rd assistants etc.

Much tougher “get” :)

Question for the group - and I realize this question is possibly idiotic - but let's say we hire DeMeo, who seems great. We would then be going from a model where you had one 3rd assistant doing all of the recruiting, to a model where you have all 3 assistants (and the head coach) who do significant amount of recruiting. And again, I realize perhaps this is a good problem to have, but could there be issues with everyone tripping over themselves / fighting over "their" guys each year with only so many spots available? Again to be clear I MUCH prefer this potential issue to the broken Matt model, but curious whether this would be something to monitor. We saw with Slice that even two guys can't always co-exist. I'll hang up and listen.

We had 2 guys tripping over themselves in Year 1. But their boss couldnt manage them. As long as the boss manages them there are no issues.

One would think the due diligence being paid is ensuring Van and TJ are talking to the candidates to ensure everyone is on the same page.

Great points. I'd imagine assistant management is one of those under the radar yet critically important attributes of a successful head coach.
