Asst coach discussion

If true, not a big fan of this pick. Don't think Pressey has any college coaching experience. However he is a former NBA player and NBA assistant coach, so obviously he's qualified to be a coach. If he does add him that makes 3 of the 4 coaches with no ties to the area, Borman almost becomes a must to add if that's the case.

A little background history of Pressy and CMA, they played together at Tulsa, and both of Pressey's sons played for CMA at Mizzou. CMA is big on having guys around him he can trust, so obviously this pick goes into that. My guess is he's being brought in to coach the forwards. And I would assume TJ and (Borman) would handle most of the recruiting duties.
We do not need a coach with local connections in order to be successful! Let's be honest, the local talent isn't as good as it once was. We need to get the best players possible, regardless of where they are from. If Borman or anyone else is a qualified candidate and checks all of the boxes for everything you want in an assistant, then go ahead and hire them, but I don't think we should hire someone just because they have local ties!

Agree that we need a national recruiting presence but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be trying to convince local kids to stay. I wouldn't waste too much time on the 5 stars going to Duke and UK until maybe we are legit again or if they clearly want to stay local. I don't agree that there's not much talent in the NYC area. There is a ton of talent in NJ, LI, the boros, Westchester, etc. Tons. The problem is we haven't been able to land them. So I think you recruit nationally but still try to convince high 3 star and low 4 star kids to stay local if they show a willingness.

Agree but disagree. You need the locals to not hate you. You need them 'on your side' in many respects. Yes you don't need a roster full of locals. But having locals not hating you like its been for the last couple of regimes is important. All won't love you. But we need more on board than we have had.

As long as Pressey is in a non recruiting role, I am all for it. NBA coaching experience, relationship with CMA is great. Just can't give up a recruiting spot to have him involved. Need young hungry and experienced recruiters.

I like the local players and I think much of the fan base does as well. Even if there is only one like we have had with Ponds or the year we had Harkless. Mullin, Berry, Artest, Barkley, Sealy, Lopez and almost all of our NBA players were local. I think it gives the program a nice feel.

Agree Moose. You want to be perceived as doing a good job regionally because if you can't it makes your national sell more challenging. If you can't recruit Jersey effectively - and perhaps more importantly have a rep that you can't - that's not a good look when you try to sell kids from Texas and California. And then that seems to take on a life of its own in recruiting circles.

NYC definitely more complex than other landscapes, but with the exception of the blue bloods who just get Top 50s every year regardless of location, most schools need and have pressure to do well in their and surrounding states. MA's experience at Arkansas and Missouri are prime examples on state school side - doubt any coach is long for those jobs if they aren't getting fair share of top kids from home state. In terms of privates I think Providence currently is quality example of strong regional presence in New England paying dividends in national recruiting game.

Every staff since Fraschilla has in one way or another made this seem like rocket science but I don't think it necessarily is and hopefully MA is on the road to simplifying it with balanced and logical approach.
My impression is MA is being selective and thoughtful about adding a local guy for AC spot. I would not assume Borman is a lock. Imo, as MCN noted, Davis or Macon would be solid. The issue to appreciate is MA and TJ don’t know these guys and naturally have to gauge their immediate value and experience before taking a leap. This is new terrain for them, so taking a little time is a good thing.
You have to be able to rely on these guys to evaluate talent, and to have enough charisma to close. You’re essentially in a foxhole with your staff and they have to understand what you are trying to build. So many guys just out there who work for themselves, which is why you have to take your time. MA had the same staff for the last 13 years.. now he’s switching it up.

I would expect positions to be filled within this week though. In his words, he’s looking for “killers” on the recruiting trail. Guys who can go get the high rated kids and help compete nationally.

I'd love to have Borman, but can he actually even recruit? He'd be there for the pipeline of course, but if it turns out that it wouldn't flow like it should, I'm not sure a staff of MA, TJ, Pressey, and Borman makes sense, as much as we got married to the idea of it. I'm thinking it might have been more of a Mullin,-you-need-to-take-this-guy situation, whereas MA doesn't need to be told how to construct a staff.

This is why a Rasheen would be good. Locals won't hate him, but he still has been at enough schools that he probably has connections from Maine to Virginia. I think that's a good enough chunk when combined with a coach who recruits and TJ, who seems to be a hustler.

Haven't looked at Macon's bio, but probably similarly well traveled while also still being known in New York/New Jersey.

New York may be down, but any program that could convince the top two or three Jersey kids to stay together can contend for a championship.

Macon worked at Rutgers and Hofstra among other schools
His bio is listed below
I would prefer TJ, Davis and Borman as assistants with Pressy in some type of support role

This is what I’m thinking. Borman has never recruited a day in his life, not to suggest he can’t do it, but MA is trying to knock this out of the park. Maybe Borman in the DOBO spot, and a couple of assistants with NY/NE/East Coast connections along with TJC, who we will be lucky to have for 2 years as I suspect he will get a HC job around then. Then you can maybe move Borman up into a position in time. Don’t sell out to maybe get access to his pipeline when honesty, if you just stay connected and build a relationship with these AAU guys, they usually are very receptive.

NYC area talent is surely not down at all. How many 4 and 5 star kids have come from the tri-state area recently? Tons. Big, big names. McDonald's All Americans and other 4 stars. The problem is we have not landed them. If anything though NYC area kids do seem to get overhyped honestly.

On St. John's assistant coaching search: Mike Anderson and TJ Cleveland are speaking to a lot of NY guys in college coaching circles. Introducing themselves and evaluating who they want and who may be the best fit, per sources

NYC is not like it use to be, not even close in terms of dominating players. And, sorry, it not tons. Big names still yes, but less numbers. This year was a big year with five McDs from New York/New Jersey with two hailing from NYC.. First time since 2010 NYC had two make it and between 2010 - 2019 only only three have been selected, Isiah Whitehead, Mohamed Bamba and Moses Brown. Whitehead is the only one to have played his entire High School career in the City, Brown played 3 out of 4 and Bamba didn' play any here.

New Jersey has definitely been carrying the torch.

Just a guess .....

Can't imagine DOBO is too high a paying position. Depending where they guys are coming from if not in college circle today, it could be more lucrative to remain in their existing HS or AAU circles.

Seems there's more NYC kids in the past 10 years that are going to out of state prep schools which might distort how the overall NYC area basketball talent pool appears on paper.

Why don't they just let Redmen.com posters take a vote and hire the winner?

More interested in getting the staff right then rushing to just fill the positions. I think we'll see the full staff coming together soon.

So Paul Pressey would not 'count' as 1 of the 3 ACs?
He'd be a SA? Does that position pay enough for a guy with Pressey's NBA resume?
Just curious on all counts.
Lol.
