Asst coach discussion

So Paul Pressey would not 'count' as 1 of the 3 ACs?
He'd be a SA? Does that position pay enough for a guy with Pressey's NBA resume?
Just curious on all counts.
Lol.
You have to consider how much he’s making now and what other options may be available to him. If he’s been out of work for two years then it would pay enough.

Now that's a great point SJFAN, about PP out of a job for 2 years. I had forgotten that key fact. Lol. That might be a worry for 'continuity' down the road, once PP is again employed, but maybe his loyalty to CMA would also be a big factor in staying around awhile.
We shall see, but Pressey sounds like he would be a great 'player development' guy for our 'bigs'.

My impression is MA is being selective and thoughtful about adding a local guy for AC spot. I would not assume Borman is a lock. Imo, as MCN noted, Davis or Macon would be solid. The issue to appreciate is MA and TJ don’t know these guys and naturally have to gauge their immediate value and experience before taking a leap. This is new terrain for them, so taking a little time is a good thing.
You have to be able to rely on these guys to evaluate talent, and to have enough charisma to close. You’re essentially in a foxhole with your staff and they have to understand what you are trying to build. So many guys just out there who work for themselves, which is why you have to take your time. MA had the same staff for the last 13 years.. now he’s switching it up.

I would expect positions to be filled within this week though. In his words, he’s looking for “killers” on the recruiting trail. Guys who can go get the high rated kids and help compete nationally.
Thanks for your input. You're a terrific addition to the board ... as your 23 "thank you's" in 8 posts suggest.
Just a guess .....

Can't imagine DOBO is too high a paying position. Depending where they guys are coming from if not in college circle today, it could be more lucrative to remain in their existing HS or AAU circles.
I'm sure it doesn't pay well but it's a way to get one foot in the door in the college ranks

Per Slater: Paul (even though he said Phil) Pressey might be joining the staff. Precious on the Lakers staff, sounds like he have never coached in college. Not sure about this one.
If Paul Pressey is to join the staff, it would be in a special position, NON recruiting. It’s being discussed.
Makes sense, if true. I don't think it'd be a wise move to bring him in as an assistant coach.

Paul and MA are best friends. Very very close, and Paul hasn’t been working for the last 2 years. Paul Pressey at this point is just interested in getting back into coaching so I don’t think money is the priority with him. Great guy to be in a developmental role. Former NBA player (Rubber Band man) and has all types of connections around the league.

This is what I'm talking about.... "Killers" on the recruiting trail. Freakin' assasins.

Pressey is 60 years old. He’s not gonna be going too many other places after this stop. This was an opportunity to coach with his best friend and help him build a program.

Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Paul Pressey gets double the enjoyment from his two sons' collegiate success

On Pressey:
"He's a straight-shooter," Matt said in a recent phone interview. "He'll be real with you. At the same time, he's understanding because he was a player, as well. He's a guy who can help you get things done, but at the same time he can understand what you're going through as a player."

Pressey's understanding comes from a career spent proving his abilities. He was a junior college transfer who excelled at Tulsa, and was selected 20th in the 1982 NBA draft. He originated the "point forward" position with Milwaukee as a 6-5 small forward who initiated the offense for coach Don Nelson, and he was a steady defender who earned All-Defense Team honors three times.

It's sounding great, and i know he has the resume to prove it, so i want to get excited, but gotta fight it. After lavin and mullin i got excited then got smacked down.
I'm not doubting cma, but i just can't do it to myself this time.
I'll be watching though and hoping he kills it.

Haha If anybody understands not trying to get too high on a coach, it’s an Arkansas fan. I will say, CMA made it work at UAB.. freakin UAB for crying out loud! Much more potential here at St. John’s, and a tireless worker who has something to prove. We might see a CMA that have never seen at his previous stops before this.

Lookin' forward to the days that follow. Not so much 'the future' since as old school says Redmen fans with 'high hopes' have been burned repeatedly in the past, but this guy seems legit, hard working, motivated, and a great coach.
Man, sure the heck looks like the guy fills all the boxes, with TJC a bonus.

I think somebody said best earlier, if he’s good Enough for Pop, he’ll be just fine. Paul has a keen basketball mind. Having him to help develop players, and to challenge MA with new was to execute his game plan is all a plus IMO.. sometimes it helps to have friends in basketball circles. He won’t be recruiting though. So you can rest easy about that.
NYC area talent is surely not down at all. How many 4 and 5 star kids have come from the tri-state area recently? Tons. Big, big names. McDonald's All Americans and other 4 stars. The problem is we have not landed them. If anything though NYC area kids do seem to get overhyped honestly.
Who are the Tons of Big, Big, Names in the past 10 years? New York talent is way down from what it was 15 and 20 years ago.

With all due respect to Mike Zaun he is too young to know the difference, the great days. Off the top of my head 1981 re MCAAs Mullin, Pinckney and Wennington. 1983 Pearl, Smith both MCAA Jackson, Hutchison, Berry and Hawkins all top 60. 1988 Sealy , Werdann both MCAA , 1994 Lopez, Hamilton and Reid all 3 MCAA. Talent is way way down from prior to 2000. Not even close. The CHSAA was the strongest league in the country.
I am sure there are many I missed but I was only trying to point out the years nyc had multiple MCAAs.
