Asst coach discussion

Per Slater: Paul (even though he said Phil) Pressey might be joining the staff. Precious on the Lakers staff, sounds like he have never coached in college. Not sure about this one.

Now the tweet is gone, could be for any reason:
1) wrong name
2) Slater once again used nephew in his tweet, he has a problem referring to TJ without nephew included.
3) not happening

Very experienced assistant. Has been coaching in NBA for a long time. Good skills guy. Active coach and nothing like Mitch. I have no idea if he can recruit or anything like that. Would certainly love another assistant that can go on road and recruit as well as coach but we will end up going in direction that Anderson is most comfortable with. I still hope we land one more real good recruiter, although that may be what Borman is for if/when he comes aboard.

If true, not a big fan of this pick. Don't think Pressey has any college coaching experience. However he is a former NBA player and NBA assistant coach, so obviously he's qualified to be a coach. If he does add him that makes 3 of the 4 coaches with no ties to the area, Borman almost becomes a must to add if that's the case.

A little background history of Pressy and CMA, they played together at Tulsa, and both of Pressey's sons played for CMA at Mizzou. CMA is big on having guys around him he can trust, so obviously this pick goes into that. My guess is he's being brought in to coach the forwards. And I would assume TJ and (Borman) would handle most of the recruiting duties.

Let’s face it. This is the way coach K does things as well. Almost always hires his former players and guys he knows and is comfortable with. It’s the “Duke way” of building a program. Pressey certainly qualifies to be a coach and is well traveled assistant in the NBA. My main concern is having the recruiters to bring talent in. Prior to this, we only had one guy, Abdelmassih, bringing talent in. He was a beast at it though. I don’t care who we have as long as we have a staff that goes out and recruits my committee like other staffs.

Well said, and you make a great point about Coach K, he hires guys in his circle and guys he's comfortable with as well, I didn't even think about that.

I just went and looked at Pressey's coaching history, he has a very nice assistant coaching resume at the NBA level. He'll make a great Forward's coach.
Maybe he will be just a development guy and not an assistant.
I don't think you bring a guy in with 15+ years of NBA assistant coaching experience for a role other than being an assistant. He's been an assistant under Greg Popovich, if he's good enough to be an assistant under Pop, I think he'll do for CMA :)

Dude coached in the NBA for 24 years and won a championship with Pop in 1999 when the Spurs beat the Knicks.

He's also been out of a job for 2 years it looks like.
Much easier to transition that into developmental role
IMO you needed 2 NY'ers on staff so this would be a tad disappointing

Many were annointing Watkins for a role like that so not much difference

If he can recruit great but it does scare me that he was never in the college coaching ranks. Will he go out on the road, will he connect with the younger players. There are definitely questions. Atleast Watkins spent his time in college. If he is the pick we need that NY’er on staff.

If Paul Pressey is to join the staff, it would be in a special position, NON recruiting. It’s being discussed.

Good to hear and I hope that is the case. We need more high powered recruiters on staff. As a non-recruiting role, more of a skills role it makes more sense. I’d still prefer a Van Macon, Rasheen Davis or somebody along those lines.

At this juncture IMO we simply cannot afford to accept no experience at the college level. Maybe after a decade of success we can take more risks, but surely not now. I'm disappointed we are apparently not getting Hsu...if we don't get Borman this would be very puzzling. I know he doesn't have college experience but he has direct experience with local AAU which is exactly what we need. It feels like forever since we've truly gotten an impact 4 star HS kid to commit here. Under Lavin it was expected and not very surprising. Now we will feel like we hit the lotto if we land one.

My impression is MA is being selective and thoughtful about adding a local guy for AC spot. I would not assume Borman is a lock. Imo, as MCN noted, Davis or Macon would be solid. The issue to appreciate is MA and TJ don’t know these guys and naturally have to gauge their immediate value and experience before taking a leap. This is new terrain for them, so taking a little time is a good thing.

Does getting Borman automatically mean SJ would have a pipeline to Rens kids or is there someone else on their staff who seems to be the guiding force on recruiting their players?I have heard the latter may apply. Secondly, how do the other AAU programs locally like New Heights, Jayhawks. Rio, etc view working with him? No clue on that, but an issue staff will explore I assume as part of due diligence. Bottom line is adding a recruiter from local pool takes a bit of thinking.

This is something where some area intel would help MA and TJ make the right call. But I don't even know who can give them an unbiased opinion of the complicated NYC area.

Just hope this works out...I will be thrilled to get a lot of high 3 star 4 year high character hard working kids and the occasional 4 star stud that we build around. We can use transfers and JUCO's to patch holes. Since I have been following this program there has been zero continuity it seems. Instead of building off a decent season, we seem to be solid once every 4 years then start all over. I hope MA and TJ can get some stability here. I have the reputation to some of wanting everyone fired but the truth is I want coaches to work out as badly as possible and I just want some stability and I want to see an actual system with a plan. So far it seems like our coaches will actually work for their checks which is refreshing.

Pressey was a great intangible guy in NBA. With his NBA experience I think he is the perfect guy to develop Greg Williams. Simon would benefit as well if he returned.

Still need to hire another recruiter but I think that Paul would surpass what Richmond provided for program.
