Assistant Coaches

fwiw, despite what was written by Roger R in the NY Daily News, i am hearing ZERO interest from Book for an assistant position at SJU.

What are you hearing when it comes to PJ?

heard the name, not sure if there are legs to the rumor.
he lives in Seattle, will inquire today....

Chris should give Calhoun a call. He lives much closer and has always loved the Big east. He doesn't seem like the type who would enjoy retirement.

Wow, hard to imagine, and turns my stomach a bit, but at the end of the day, having Calhoun on the bench would be incredible.

Having Calhoun's nose for talent, x's and o's, and player development skills would be amazing for any team. To turn your nose up at him because he stole a recruit or because you don't like Uconn is just as silly as not wanting to hire a prospective coach because he attended Duke. I don't think Calhoun would accept an assistant role, but it'd be crazy for us to not want him.

We all know its not a realistic option for multiple reasons. Mullin has a better shot at getting Bobby Knight to join him as a special assistant than Calhoun ever has.

Well he spelled one last name right but not the easier one.

Does anyone know the status of Zendon Hamilton? Wasn't he an assistant in training or something like that with Lavin?

Calhoun made very disparaging remarks about St. John's and our program and status over the years. "Local Catholic school, not likely to become competitive again, time has passed it by, small time, parochial thinking", yadda yadda, not too likely he would want anything to do with us and vice versa.

Agreed. I also don't see him going to a Big East school. It would just seem to odd. Maybe he takes BC, rebuilds them and leaves them in good hands 3 years from now. He'c coached in Boston, and its very close. That would be a perfect job for him.

I lost a little of my hatred for him when I saw an interview when he spoke of his charitable efforts. The guy does some good stuff in that regard.

Calhoun would be awesome . . . but this is the type of conversation that gets us laughed at on the Boneyard. He was making over $3 million at UConn, and is one of the greatest coaches of all time. Even if he wanted to completely stick it to UConn for forcing him out, he'd only do so as a head coach. And they are now in a PoS conference so it wouldn't even be sticking it to them to go over to the former enemy in a different conference.

BC should open the checkbook. He'd be able to outcoach Coach K yet again there.

Well, now that we've all filled our assistant coaching openings, maybe we can go and sign a head coach. :(

Now back to realistic assistant options for SJU

Calhoun's days as a head coach are over. Too old for the daily grind, recruiting etc. But no reason why he can't sit on someones bench drawing up X's and O's. One of the top coaches of all time. Would people really not want him on the bench because he said some unpleasant things? How sensitive are we. Imagine what Chris could learn from him. Calhoun's not making 3m anymore. I think the guy just loves to coach. I'm sure he would love to walk back into the Garden. He would probably do it for free. He's a lifer, coaching is in his blood.

I have zero sources and even I can say with confidence Calhoun is not coming here to be an assistant. Let's move on.

Yes, lets get back to more realistic options like PJ who is retired on the west coast and hasn't been in the college game since 1994.

I've seen Matt A, Slice and Ed Pinckney's names thrown around.

But what about a bench coach, aka the X's and O's guy, aka the Mike Dunlap, aka the guy we can blame when things don't work out?

Jim Calhoun? Hell we'd have a better chance of landing Corky.

Uhhh sure.
But we are talking about a 7 year age difference between PJ and Calhoun and the fact that Calhoun is a HOF coach who will never come back especially as an asst coach whereas PJ has been assistant in NBA.

And does where he live matter exactly? We got Keady to come here from middle of nowhere.

I threw out a name of someone that coached Chris in a couple of places and knows the college game and the NY area.
