Assistant Coaches

It definitely appears that Matt A will come. The other name I keep hearing is Ed Pinkney. Hopefully Slice comes, but net of papers, Internet, have not heard anything substantial on that.

Patience.

After seeing 48 guys in suits at each and every game on and behind the bench, how many assistants, recruiters and other does a team typically have?

Teams typically have three assistants and a Director of Basketball Operations
Plus schools have other support type positions (iie: Keady, etc)

Probably won't hear anything on slice until Kentucky is done with their season. With slice I feel like it may come down to calipari and his decision. If UK goes undefeated I think he will go to the NBA. We will see

How about Rollie?

He lives in Jupiter, Florida and is still coaching
He is the coach at Northwood University, an NAIA school, in West Palm Beach
Coach has done very well there in the past few years
He is around 80 years old

If you are looking for a guy with extensive experience, I think Moose's PJ suggestion is a better thought, assuming he would want that role at this stage in life.

It's hard to be patient
It's like being a kid again, seeing the gifts under the tree and having to wait to open them
I can't wait to see that Mullin and his staff are signed, sealed and delivered

Matt A makes sense. Slice and Book I just can't see doing it. Both have a legitimate shot to win a national title every year.

Agree on Book. With Slice, the wild cards may be what Cal does & how much $$$ we can pay him. He loves wearing this pinstripe suits in Manhattan. :)

is this a situation where Mullin is Peyton Manning or Tom Brady and takes a little less money in order to get a better supporting cast? Could pay large dividends in the future for himself and the program if that's what it takes to get an all-star bench

I think his budget will be clear before he signs. He's no dummy.

I hope. Tbh I have heard that the school is in deep financial trouble. Real trouble. Not fixable by donations.

SJU costs like 50-60k per year now. 15 years ago it was 13K/year. They have plenty of applicants all years and im positive they aren't in financial trouble.

I was thinking this with tuition being so high and a large student body. How could they possibly be in trouble?

It will come out eventually. They're in trouble. About 85% kids at the school are on some type of scholarship. Theres some deal where if you just go to catholic school, not only do you get admitted, but you get an instant scholarship right off the bat. I'm not making this up, it will come out eventually.

I wish that was the case when I went there... :)

Here are the financials. I am not an expert on 501(c)3 accounting but they look okay to me. Positive cash from operations, almost $400MM in cash and investments, debt horizon is way out there and should they choose, could be refinanced at lower rates. I do not see the trouble you speak of.

This is as of 5/31/13. Endowment should have appreciated well with market gains over the last two years.

Staff of Slice, Matt A (who will deliver Diallo), Pickney, Terrence as DOBO plus perhaps one other former SJU player will be fantastic.

We will now win when it counts; not only in the press conference like the past decade.

Chances of Slice coming?

Of those names, Slice is the wildcard of course. I would love to have a camera follow Mullin, Slice , and Matt A. as they approach a recruit and his family.

I like the Pickney idea because he is a New Yorker and will also provide that old, tough BE mentality.

Exactly what I was thinking - same example. So happy that even those with reservations about Mullin are excited and ready to support him 100%

How about Wennington to coach the bigs  If we get Abdelmissah them maybe Chris pulls in one of his nba buddies (ala Lavin) or one of high school coaches in the area.

I think he's got a different guy in mind to work with the bigs.

Knowing Mullin, I think he'd like to see Hamilton return in the same capacity if Hamilton is still interested. I'd be a little shocked if Mullin didn't bring an NBA guy as his third assistant. This is assuming that Slice and Matt A are on board (and Mullin too for that matter). It' much more fun to assume they both are because of what could follow, so I'll do that until it is debunked.

I agree with you on an NBA guy. I have been excited about the AC prospects & probably overstated when I referred to one guy being "wrapped up". I do believe Mullin will hit the ground running & have a solid staff. I hope Slice comes, but could certainly see him declining. One of the news articles referred to Ed Pickney as a possible candidate. That would line up with your thoughts. Frankly, I would love that. A Bronx guy, Nova great, NBA experience & cousin of Billy Singleton. Great day today & fun week ahead I suspect.

Mullin an Pinckney were good friends back when. He's a really good man. Would love to see him here - he hasn't been in college since 2007, after he assisted at Nova for 4 seasons.

One of the best all time sequences was SJU vs. Nova. Mullin drives left, Pinckney switches of on Mullin and blocks his shot. Mullin gets the ball and Pinckney blocks it again, and then again. Mullin goes up again, makes the basket and gets fouled. Three point play. remember where I was sitting, so I think it may have been at Nova. Anyone with any recollection?

You are correct. at Villamova it was. One of the best plays I can remember. Also remember the last seconds of the win at Georgetown when he just looked at the clock and realized he didn't have to throw it in and just sort of walked off the court. Can't do that now since the clock stops of course.
