Assistant Coaches

Saw Greg St. Jean in the law school cafeteria today donning SJU basketball gear, anyone know his role with the team? Know of him because he played at Wesleyan.

connects with Mullin via Gary St. Jean/ Warriors. Greg the Sacramento Kings. Player development.

Any update on the new staff? Is Zendon in the mix for DOBO?

The single most important get is the third assistant! Hope it's an NBA guy who can work with bigs, we dont have anyone at the moment to work with bigs! I am not sold on this team being good next season at all. Too many question marks with our returning talent, both Jordan and Obekpa have had multiple issues. We didn't sign any studs, so we really need someone to compliment Mullin who would be great with guards

I'm not worried about next year. I'm excited about the year after that, and so on. Before Chris was hired, the starting 5 looked to be Amir Felix, B Samp and maybe the 2 other freshman recruits. We look much better now. I would also rather give Chris and the staff a year with this team before expectations for a big season were high. The trajectory is up, with next season a building block.

Curiously, the heading on this post is "Federico Mussini - PG". Topic is about Asst Coaches. Conversation seems to apply to Asst Coach thread. Is there some break in the logic?

It was if a off topic post from the Mussini thread that was moved here.

As expected;

@AdamZagoria: All signs point to Ed Pinckney joining Chris Mullin's staff at St. John's after the Bulls season ends, sources told @SNYtv

I know. We all know there's turmoil in the front office at Chicago, but for an nba assistant go to the college game for another assistant job is crazy.

Him and Chris must be very close.

Chris would have signed an assistant by now if he wasn't waiting for Pinkney. We obviously need someone who can work with the bigs.

I've listed some quotes below from Villanova fans once news broke that Pinckney will most likely be joining the staff after the Bull's season is over. Reading between the lines, I think the overall consensus by their fans is, great hire, but why St. John's of all places and not the NBA, and if he wanted to go to a college team, why not us. Hopefully, a changing of the guard is upon us over the next 3 - 5 years.

"Why would Jay not pick him up? He brings value."

"Maybe Jay can't shuffle his staff to make it happen?"

"This is a big $$$$$$ hire boys"

"I’d bet you dollars to donuts SJU boosters are stepping up big for this one."

"This is a guy who has been getting NBA head coaching interviews. Does Chris Mullin have evidence of EZ Ed committing a crime or something?"

"We are going to be favorites to repeat as Big East champs…again… and Pinckney knows Jay—especially how he coaches and thinks. Coincidence?"

"Then take down the jersey – you don’t go against family."

Ed is the man. Made himself very visible and accessible to Villanova fans when he was at Villanova. Would always stop in to the celebration at the big bar at the Wells Fargo Center (might have been the Wachovia back then) and hang out with the Villanova fans after a win. I don't know if you have ever seen him interviewed but really well-spoken, likeable guy.

This is a good pickup.

Remember a game at MSG where Louie had Chris at 6'6 covering the 6'10 Pinckney and I thought he was nuts. Chris did a great defensive job on Ed. Don't recall how often Lou did this in the ten or so match ups between the two teams while they were in college.

There will always be an NBA assistant spot for him somewhere, but that position still hasn't gotten him a head coaching gig. Maybe taking a supposed step backward gets him a few steps forward two years from now.

Or maybe he realized he hates pros and is more than happy to go back to the college environment.

I think he's fed up with the circus in Chicago and may be out of a job soon after the playoffs despite all the success. Plus Chris is a longtime friend.

Maybe he wants to win another national championship
