Around the Big East

Brutal loss for Friars. Offensive sets were terrible down the stretch and interior defense disappeared. Cooley has got to be shaking his head 17 point lead to a 4 point loss that was was not that close.

I didn't get to see much of the game but I noticed the big frosh from SC who seemed to know his place was down low and knew what to do with the ball once he got it. Nice footwork and a pretty hook shot. Couldn't help but think this is exactly what we need next year.

Providence looks like garbage now that USC has taken the lead. What a turn around and Cooley with nothing.

Cooley was not out there going through the motions. He has proven his chops, as I said many times this year about us, this is on the players.

I'm of two minds about Cooley.

Obviously, on the whole, he has done a great job at Providence. He's certainly gotten some results. I can't remember the last time Providence made 4 straight NCAA tournaments, if they've ever done it. This was the year for other teams to get Providence, and he still led them to a successful season on the whole (the last 2 games stunk, but frankly, they overachieved). They also have a big time recruit coming in next year, Nate Watson, so they should be good for the foreseeable future.

OTOH, he's never been beyond the Round of 32 (needing a miracle to even get there last year), and I'm wondering if maybe the Sweet 16 once, is his ceiling. He seems to be easily outfoxed WRT in-game adjustments. He does a good job preparing his team to play, and they play hard for him, but it seems that the minute the opposing coach goes "off-script" (meaning against the known scouting report), he's done. I also thought that the free reign he continued to give Kyron Cartwright these last 2 games was abominable.

Still, he's been the most successful coach at Providence since Pitino (who wasn't around long enough), and Friar fans realize they are lucky to have him. I just wouldn't expect a national championship banner, or even a Final Four banner, to be raised at the Dunk anytime soon.

I also hope that his exit from Providence (eons in the future), will go better then the inevitable exit that JT3 will have to make from Georgetown, someday.

Like quarterbacks, coaches get too much credit/blame. Providence players were just sleepwalking in the 2nd half, blame Cooley I guess, but if you can't get after it in the NCAA's, what pep talk is going to light a fire? As for Cartwright, you gotta dance with who you brung.

Cooley is the perfect coach for Providence. Gets his players to play hard and occasionally recruits studs. Flip side is that he seems to be happy there and probably won't get a lot of job offers elsewhere.

Cooley is like the Burger at Burger Fi. Very solid burger and makes the most of everything. Wont get to the Shake Shack level or even 5guys but a very solid burger nonetheless

I am tempted to give you a -1 for not making a lobster roll analogy :)

Ok. Cooley is like Rexburger and lobster in mineola. Not a place that you would think of as a great place to go for a lobster roll. Yet they have succeeded where most underachieve. They will never get to the status of Lobster Roll in Amagansett or Luke or Red Hook Lobster Pound but RexBurger and Lobster still a very solid choice

Cooley is the best possible long-term coach a program like Providence could hope for. They really lucked up with that hire. The only coaches better that they have ever had or will ever have are short term guys using Prov as a quick stepping stone.

Friar fans aren't the brightest bunch but I think they are smart enough to appreciate that fact.

Gillen's '97 squad was a shot away from the Final Four.

He never did much else there, though.

Also, while that was a good team (great win over Duke in round 2), they were also a 10 seed, who got to wear their white uniforms in the Sweet Sixteen. So, they were lucky in that regard (though I suppose luck has to play a part in any deep tournament run).

Xavier as uninspired and effortless as Providence. Hard to understand. Meanwhile Nova has 13 points in 13 minutes.

I had a rare opportunity to watch ball all day today and my one general comment on a subject I normally won't touch - the refereeing is comically, embarrassingly bad.

I've watched the least amount of college ball ever and this is the reason.
Something needs to be done
