Around the Big East

A final update on former Redman, Chris Jones. Against a pretty weak Utah State team, Jones had his best game this year, playing 36 minutes and going for 16 and 12.
Would he have made a difference for STJ? With Sima transferring, and the various injuries, we could have used him. He could have shared power forward position with Yakwe.

He would have taken the power forward from Yakwe.

Not St John's per se but some relevant insights in this story on the style and philosophy Mullin seems to be going for (NYT via ZachB):

The Hall beat Butler today on the road. Nice road win for them. Sometimes it feels like there are two subdivisions in the Big East. There's us, DePaul and Georgetown. And then there's everybody else. :eek:hmy:

You are not alone!

Seton Hall finished strong and ended up 10-8 . At one point they seemed left for dead. Gotta give them credit.

As for Providence, they looked done at 4-8 and then won 6 straight conference games to finish 10-8. Impressive.

Looks like the Big East has a chance to get 7 teams in, that's what's currently projected on ESPN. Would be very impressive.

you are right. Those 2 teams peaked at the perfect time

I would be worried if I was Xavier. The injuries were terrible but six of the nine conference games they won were against the bottom three. Leaving them with three wins against the top four which is one less then us. They do have a win over the ACC power Wake Forest that will likely get the ACC's tenth bid.

Xavier probably needs to beat DePaul in the Tournament. That happens and we get 7 bids. Extremely impressive.

My personal choices for the three big awards:

POY- Josh Hart (You can make a case for Delgado, but I generally lean towards the best player on the best team).

COY - Ed Cooley (I look at that roster, and wonder how the heck they will be in the NCAA Tournament. Some of that is that the current crop did get to sit and learn for two years, but they learned from a good teacher. Not a great game coach, IMO, but the program should always be good, as long as he sticks around).

ROY - Shamorie Ponds (He pulled away from Lovett and Patton in the last two weeks. I actually don't think he is going to get much better in future years, because he is pretty darn great right now. If anything, he has actually been unselfish to a fault, at times, which is a quality you rarely see in a freshman).

Agree on all 3

Agree

Patton made the All Big East Second Team so he has a shot at Big East player of the Year.

I would go Holtzman for COY, but have no problem with Cooley getting it.

Any year you can add Ponds, Lovett, and Owens to you roster has to be a big positive. Lovett and Ponds can play for anyone, and Owens could get minutes right now in most programs.

Congrats to our guys - they earned it
