Chris Jones played 31 minutes and went for nine and nine, on road, in upset win vs New Mexico.

Meanwhile, in Monday's game, Amar went 0-3 (all from 3-point range) with 0 rebounds and 3 fouls.

And if he had played like that while he was here, he still be here most likely. Lavin raved about him his freshman year remember. That was five years ago. He never lived up to Lavin's hype. He did finish strong last year so maybe it all finally clicked. Who knows. it looked like it on UNLV's summer trip but then he got off to a slow start when the season started and then got injured. Came back was so-so until his last two or three games. Maybe he reverts next game.
He played well at the end of the season and was a 5th year Sr., so would be gone at the end of the year. Minimal investment. One critism of Mullin is is preference for guys like Amar and Freud as opposed to strong , lunch pail type rebounders w an inside game, which is what we need. We have plenty of shooters , have to compliment them.

Is this CJ/Amar thing ever going to end? In the overall scheme of things this season does anybody really think CJ would be putting up UNLV type numbers here, or have turned any of our losses into wins? Fact of the matter is our offense, for better or worse, runs through Marcus and Shamorie with Bashir , Malik and Fed the next level, CJ would be the fifth option at best. It is was it is, CJ is over so can we all just let it go

Jones actually had two strong games to start the season as I recall. He was injured shortly thereafter.

For the last time , if CJ wanted to be here he would be here. He wanted to leave to play more ,so he left. Best of luck CJ. Can we please end this discussion if CJ was here. ?

I was under the impression he was told it might be in his best interest to leave. But as they say, it is water under the bridge. Not getting Livingston hurt.

CJ never consistently showed he was a lunch pail type rebounder with an inside game. He is a very good athlete with a great physic, leaping ability and quickness but he never used it to his advantage. He was a poor rebounder (okay that would have fit in with this team), who had good inside moves but could not or would not finish. How many times did we see him make a good move only to throw up a brick or air ball afterwards?

While here I think he was one of those players who looked great in practice all of the time but couldn't do it consistently in a game which is what fooled Lavin at the beginning.

As I said in another thread regarding letting Amir come back instead of Jones, who says Jones wanted to come back?

Is Lavon French for Lavin? ;) :)

Great game. Marquette with the 89-86 OT win. The Hall had a 3-point shot at the buzzer, but it went wide.

Desi Rodriguez with 30 points. Frustrating to watch him since he's the type of local kid we used to land.

That said, if we get only one more BE win, I sure hope it's against Seton Hall. Never liked them, and now that their fans have a really cocky, dismissive attitude toward us, I dislike them even more.

Hate to say it but some here had the same attitude toward them even with them being over us. May just be a local rivalry thing.

His list of offers was not very impressive:

I have said in another thread: No problem if we recruit some local player only offered by mid-majors.

Agree completely. Between the NY and NJ schools, there are a lot of under-the-radar kids like Rodriquez. Jay Wright was talking the other day about how he originally wound up seeing Josh Hart in HS by accident. He went to a HS game to see another kid and noticed Hart. Hart had not blown up yet so was not well known. Then he got to know the kid and his family and quickly realized that not only could the kid play, but that he was a high quality kid from a high quality family. So he stayed on the kid and eventually landed him. Granted the kid wound up being a top 100 kid when he finished HS, but Wright was on him early. The point I'm making is that if our staff continues to hit the local gyms, we should be able to pick up a few solid kids here and there who are being recruited mostly by mid-majors, but who can be solid 4 year players for us.

Coaches push people out to open up scholarships and this is probably what happened to Chris. This is very common in college hoops when a new coach takes over. He wants to get his own guys in. It also appeared to have happened to Amar until they realized they would not fill the ship and invited him back. I would not be surprised if this happens to Amar this offseason if nobody transfers.

Chris Definitely would have helped as an additional big body next year.

I imagine it isn't the easiest task finding a kid who only has mid-major offers but can grow into a starter by junior or senior year, and then keeping him happy and motivated while he sits when he knows he could get more time at Hofstra. And if it's a PSAL kid, there have been some years where exactly one kid has qualified right out of high school for freshman participation, so there's that to worry about too.

I agree with your thoughts on the subject, but the staff probably thinks we need to make a bigger splash.

I don't follow the scene as closely as I used to, but I've come across Christian Hinckson from Bowne's name a few times lately. Probably only has mid-major offers and I've never seen him in person, but on paper, that's the type of kid that seems to fit the bill.

Despite the fact he has become a fantastic player in college, if Lavin or any of his predecessors (Roberts, Jarvis) would have signed him, many on this Board would have been all over them for signing a mid-major player and would have complained that it proved that they could not or would not (because they were lazy - a familiar refrain in Lavin's and Jarvis' final years) recruit. Now if he was a package deal with his more heavily recruited HS teammate (Whitehead) or part of a group of more highly rated recruits that were coming, the out cry would have been less.

Of course he has turned into gold and I am not sure the Hall knew what they were eventually getting. He and Carrington (who we were recruiting hard up to a point) are both dynamite and hail from Brooklyn.

Don't really follow the NJ high school scene, but it seems like there may be more of these types of kids in NJ right now. Many of them attending catholic schools which oftentimes means that they are more likely to qualify also.

Because of having his hands tied, Roberts was pretty much stuck going after the mid-major type kids and actually did a pretty damn good job getting them. As for Lavin, he was looking to fill out his rosters with walk-ons, so I for one always wondered why he wasn't going after the mid-major types to compliment his top 100 kids. But of course he'd never know much about the mid major types because he would have actually had to set foot in a high school gym first.
