Around the Big East

This Saturday is huge for the conference. Every Big East team is in action (except for SJU) and games include:

#12 Nova @ #8 Virginia
#17 Butler vs #9 Purdue
Auburn @ # 10 Xavier
Creighton @ #3 Oklahoma
and more...

Tough games but a good opportunity to solidify how good the Big East has done in non-confernence play this year.

Not good matchups except X. If Creighton is even competitive that will be impressive. I think they will get smoked badly.

Just as the college football season ends and I thought I had my Saturdays back and I was out, they drag me back in! :)

Georgetown trailing Monmouth 34-25 at the under-4.

Monmouth has been something this season.

It's now 62-49 with with just over 7 minutes to go.

With DePaul playing at Stanford later, it looks like it could be an ugly night for the Big East.

Don't know what I found more surprising, that Myles Davis (Xavier) is still in college. Or that he is only a Jr.

Actually, very surprising - my son played against him when Davis was in HS at St. Peter's of Jersey City and Davis was a year ahead of him then. My son is 23 and out of college for 2 years.

Davis just turned 22 in November -http://goxavier.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=2105&path=mbball

That's my bad, we played St Peter's in the states two years in a row and when Davis was not there the 2nd year I assumed he graduated - not the case, he prepped. I stand corrected!!!!!

Myles Davis went to prep school for a year after high school. When he got to Xavier he sat out his freshman year because he was a partial qualifier. He is now a R/S Junior.

Unless Monmouth's entire team is graduating, they are not going to be able to fill out a schedule next year. Who the heck is going to want to play this team in the non-conference?

As far as an at-large bid is concerned, they probably can only afford 1 or 2 more MAAC losses (they have one already). Do that, and get to the finals of the MAAC tournament, and that should be good enough. If they can keep up this level of play, they should have nothing to worry about.

I'm sure the Monmouth bench mob had a fun day.

One senior and many juniors so you are right about people not wanting to play them. Let's see how long they can hold on to their coach.

They did. Those dudes are a trip. It's only funny when they're not doing it to your team.

Monmouth pretty much controlled the game from start to finish.

The issue with Georgetown isn't that they lost this game. It's that they haven't been playing well since the new league started and they're supposed to be THE flagship school. When this league started just 3 years ago, Georgetown was widely viewed as the #1 school. Since then they've made the tournament once and won one game. This year they're looking iffy. Radford loss was brutal.

Fortunately, every other school besides DePaul has stepped up. Nova became the team Georgetown was supposed to be and others have gotten into the rankings. But for a flagship school, Georgetown hasn't been playing like one. In the Big East they've been simply average so far. This year they're below average.

Agree they are an enigma so far this season.
Against Md. Wisc, dook and syracuse they look like sweet 16 material.

I think with what they have proved this OOC schedule if they win the MAAC regular season they should get in. But that wont be easy this year.

This is the best story of the early college hoops season. It's a remarkable achievement in this day of the power conferences. It's great for the sport.
