Around the Big East

Uconn does not want to be in the Big East because it'd mean giving up on football. They are holding out for ACC/B1G/etc. Now whether that's smart doesn't matter, fact is they're all in on football for now.

They don't have to give up football. They just need to go down to the same league nova is in or the same division of football. Uconn used to be there.

And yea UConn left and I don't like them, but I love this conference and this deal with fox and the deal with MSG to have the BET. And if adding UConn would increase our viewer numbers on FS1 and our attendance at MSG in March I wouldn't mind

Going down to the league Nova is in IS giving up on football. Uconn is FBS in the AAC Nova is FBC. The leagues aren't comparable.

LSU v Marquette tonight in Brooklyn at BA. Welcome Brandon Sampson, who is starting & playing a lot of minutes.

That Simmons is a player. Damn he looked good today

Yeah, he is very good unlike their coach, who does less with talent than most year after year.

Duke/Georgetown draws in more spectators for a November game than the big east tourney can draw in March when college hoops is king.

This really sucks for the league

The league has been in existence for a year, I don't know if it will create the buzz anywhere near the old one but we do need to give it a chance. Duke is Duke and will always draw in NY as long as K is their. Otherwise, football calls the shots and It is only going to get tougher for basketball only schools. I think it will help immensely if we can quickly, in 3 or 4 years, create a real national presence.

There are member schools that did not bring fans here for the past two years. Duke and Kentucky always draw here, but now it is different. It's like they are on another level. The league needs to put real pressure on the Xavier's and the others to bring people to the tournament. We can't call ourselves a hoops centric conference and draw 15k crowds to a championship in NYC. If the league can't figure out how to sell out the tournament by year three they may as well move it.

The original Big East was truly a regional conference, with all member schools having a considerable alumni presence in the NYC metro area. They were also all within driving distance of NYC. Xavier does not have a large alumni population within NYC, and like many urban Catholic schools, its older alumni in particular are mostly from the Cincinnati area. I would think that's true for Butler, Creighton, and most of the Big East schools not in proximity to NYC. When those schools put great teams on the floor, their fans will travel proportionate to their alumni base. Filling the Garden for the new BET is a challenge, especially without UCONN and Syracuse fans to buy up hordes of available seats.

Duke has a large NYC alumni base. I don't think Kentucky has.

Should talk of future expansion include any of Stony Brook, Hofstra, Manhattan or Iona?
:)

Yep, he is getting a ton of playing time, which reinforces the theory that he was never coming here regardless of who was HC.

I think hes getting PT because of an injury. That said Im not convinced he would have signed his LOI w Lavin anyway.

I remember seeing a report that implied he picked SJU because LSU stopped recruiting him. It seemed like he always wanted to go to LSU, he just needed the opportunity.

This has been rehashed many times. He stated in an interview with a New Orleans newspaper that he was definitely going to St. John's because of his relationship with Steve Lavin. This is a direct response from the recruit not nonsense conjecture by posters.

This is true. As I think I noted before, a close friend of my conversed with his mom often during the process & The above post is spot on.

But nonsense conjecture is so much more fun. I mean if you're not into nonsense conjecture how does one survive their daily visits to this board?

That's what happens when a couple of agenda-driven folks delivers info to the gullible or people who has a similar agenda than the person(s) who delivered the info.... Nonsensical conjecture.

Beast, I agree with every point. It is a significant challenge for the league, right up there with tv ratings and wins in deep March. I hope we see improvements on all fronts in 2016

He could have signed his LOI and if he asked out after Lavin got fired the Anti Lavinites ( just made that word up ) would be saying he had no intention of honoring his LOI if Lavin was still the coach :)

Not BE obviously but Monmouth just beat Notre Dame 70-68, out-scoring them 19-0 off the bench. Good game, not a fluke, Monmouth already had beaten UCLA at Pauley this year.

Good day for BE with wins by Nova (over Stanford), Xavier (over Alabama), and Providence (over Evansville). ... Plus good to see Dayton takes it to Iowa.

@UndercoverFriar: Providence vs. Arizona tonight. These two teams haven't faced off since the 1997 Elite Eight. #pcbb

@Kim_Adams1: 3 @BIGEASTMBB games today:

Xavier vs USC - 2:30pm ESPNU
Villanova vs Georgia Tech - 3pm ESPN2
Providence vs #11 Arizona - 11:30pm ESPN2
