Kid might want Miami, with hotter women and South Beach nearby. Parents might think Harvard is a better choice...but why listen to them.

No athletic scholarships in Ivy League -- some parents might agree with their kid to go to Miami, albeit for different reasons.

If you think a kid like Bryce Aiken pays a dollar out of his pocket to play at Harvard .. Then I would like to talk with you about some land for sale in Florida :).

I certainly wouldn't doubt you, but how does that work? Grants cover his cost 100 percent? Or does he get a bunch of Rotary Club and Kiwanis scholarships? Or just flat-out cheating in the Ivies like AAU programs paying his bills if his family doesn't have the means?

Wink and a handshake usually gets it done :)

I know most people here don't like SHU but great job on another top 100 recruit for the Big East. Hope they get Aiken.

100% correct Happy - my nephew played football at Princeton and never paid a cent. Financial aid, alumni, etc.

Blue Ribbon magazine chooses Kris Dunn as National Player of the Year - nice recognition for him and the Big East....

I'm a big Dunn fan, as much for his demeanor off the court as on. But the expectations are incredibly high for him. It'll be interesting to see how he does without LaDontae Henton.

Unfortunately your nephews experience was not my experience.

My son attended Brown as a recruited athlete, earned 1st team All-Ivy designation his Junior and Senior years, qualified to compete for a position on the US National tram (which he declined) but he never got a nickel of aid or financial assistance. During his 4 years my son asked his teammates whether they had received non financial aid money and all said "no".

So yeah, I believe that if a recruited athlete qualifies for financial aid then s/he will be taken care of, but I do not believe that a kid from a financially able family gets non financial aid by a "wink and a handshake" as Happy and others would have you believe.

Also, the factor which some in this thread overlook is the Ivy Index which each of the Ivy school are required to comply which restricts admission of recruited athletes.

Not commenting obviously on your experience but the financial aid my nephew received 20 years ago was not needed, it was an enticement to attend Princeton because he had other mid-level D1 options that offered full rides. I would agree that not every institution operates the same way but the reality Happy describes exists and exists maybe not everywhere but certainly anywhere.

I am certainly not an expert on this but my brother attended Princeton and I know they have a whole lot more money then Brown.

Harvard basketball ... Tommy A and a top 100 recruit... He is going to school for free. either way Aiken isn't a pro so he should go and get that IVY education and set himself up for the rest of his life.

There's a huge difference between playing football and sitting down in a boat yelling at the rowers.

I have a buddy who played football at Dartmouth on the Jay Fiedler teams and he said football funded all other sports at the college.
