Around the Big East

Recognize that we all hate them, but would still prefer to see UConn in the BE again ... provided there'd be very harsh penalties if they wanted to opt out at any time. Would be an immediate big boost for all concerned. (And whatever UConn would do about its pathetic football program would be its problem.) None of the other teams mentioned excites me (especially with Shaka Smart out of the equation, and Gonzaga a geographical impossibility); and some of them would do absolutely nothing to elevate the quality of the conference or its perception. We can do without expansion just for the sake of expansion.

I think the wounds run too deep and football is a non-starter.

UConn and Memphis would raise the profile of the conference immensely, but I don't think it's ever happening.

When the BE expands (and I do see them expanding) the two main factors that have to be considered besides on court success are 1. size of market (media footprint) and 2. fan support (attendance & alums).

The top DMA's for last year are- (Bolded Cities have BE team)

1. New York
2. LA
3. Chicago
4. Philadelphia

5. Dallas-Fort Worth
6. San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose
7. Washington
8. Boston
9. Atlanta
10. Houston
11. Tampa
12. Phoenix
13. Detroit
14. Seattle
15. Minneapolis
16. Miami
17. Denver
18. Cleveland
19. Orlando
20. Sacramento
21. St. Louis
22. Charlotte
23. Pittsburgh
24. Portland
25. Raleigh

27. indianapolis
35. Milwaukee

36. Cincinnati
52. Providence (maybe some Boston but I can't give it full credit)
74. Omaha

Sadly, you're probably right.

The Mjmaherjr criteria for expansion is where I would like to road trip. Memphis hell yes. An expansion team from vegas would be nice but I'd settle for anything from colorado or new orleans

How does UConn factor into this, since they have SNY as well as local media support? UCONN always seemingly got the support of the NY media at times anyway, probably because of what they did in the BE tourney

I think I'm good with St. Louis and Dayton if the alternatives are Holy Cross, Detroit Mercy, University of Denver, and Duquesne. Would love to see a West Coast-ish division, but probably not realistic, and moving into mega conference ridiculousness if done wrong.

Witchita state and st.louis are 2 I'd like to see join.

I'd take Wichita State in a second if you could guarantee me that Marshall stays forever or his replacement is a big name. The problem is that they were dormant for a long time before his arrival. I think they might be in the conversation, but the BE will be afraid to pull the trigger for the above reason, along with not enough eyeballs in the TV market.

I agree about fan support but the thing about college basketball is sometimes it gets overshadowed by professional sports in bigger cities. Omaha is 74 on that list but Creighton has the best attendance in our league (either them or Marquette). There's zero enthusiasm and awful attendance for the teams in Chicago and Boston (though in fairness those schools suck).

It'll be real interesting to see what a SJU similar to the teams in the 80s could do in NYC. SJU has had a few good teams during Lavin's era and the attendance that first year really should've been much, much higher. Of course, this success wasn't sustained but the attendance still should've been higher.

Basically I feel like a college basketball team in a big city has to be really good consistency to get attention. It seems like most isuccessful teams in college aren't in large cities, especially for football. I'd like to see an East coast school with a rabid fantasy that could help fill up MSG for the tournament, like Dayton and VCU. Seems most of the dedicated fans are too far away in places like Omaha and Milwaukee.

Cooley put a ton of time in on this kid early, but "big boys" entered the race.

@courtcred: Wenyen Gabriel chooses Kentucky over Duke, Maryland, Providence and UConn.

@AdamZagoria: Villanova University has been named the inaugural winner of the Big East Presidents’ Award, which has been newly established by theBig East

@AdamZagoria: Conference to annually recognize a member institution that has excelled in the areas of academics, athletics and citizenship.

Your point about attendance is well taken but the real money in sports is in TV revenue.

But at somepoint having everyone in Dayton OH watching has to be worth more TV money than having a smaller and smaller fraction of a percentage point of Chicago watching, doesn't it?

The WSJ had an interesting article about the $$ value of each NCAA men's basketball team. Louisville is #1. The interesting part is that within the Big East, Xavier and Marquette are at the top. Here is the ranking for BE teams:

20. Xavier
28. Marquette
40. Villanova
42. St John’s
44. Georgetown
47. Providence
70. DePaul
82. Creighton
83. Seton Hall
94. Butler

Dayton comes out at # 23.

@Coach_Rick57: Per source, Davion Mintz has committed to Creighton

@coreyevans_10: Big time pickup for Creighton! Giant ceiling, versatility in backcourt, toughness, intangibles, change of pace guy

"Big time pickup"? From what I could find, he's a two-star recruit.
