Around the Big East

my 2 cents...

I hope this league does NOT expand.

I love how this conference has true home/home balance scheduling...and how competitive the league is as a whole. Don't want Dayton, St. Louis, Umass, whatever. I like this ten. Even Depaul...they help disguise our own issues. :)

Many nights, even with big ACC games on ESPN, I find myself satisfied with a Butler/G'Town, or Providence/Xavier. The "vibe" reminds me of an earlier Big East for sure. Physical, competitive.

Xavier beating 19 butler by 20 in second half

Is that good or bad for us??

Probably not good unless Xavier can get into the top 25 of the RPI to improve our record against that group. It looks like fifth place in the Big East gets a golden ticket to the dance. Sixth place is less certain, but there are many other variables that will come into play.

The winner of the St. John's-Xavier game will be securely in--Xavier for good and SJU subject to winning at least one more game. I love our schedule to close the season...so much potential there for RPI gains.

Marillac meant if Jarvis took the Wizards job and Wright took over an STJ program sill on a high from the Riverside crews exploits. Yes, that really happened. Shows why Jordan shouldn't be allowed near an NBA team's front office as has been exhibited repeatedly.

LOL

Wow! Yeah, I meant if Jarvis (not Lavin) went to the Wizards, as he was heavily rumored to do, and Jay Wright took over for St. John's at an all-time high coming off the Elite Eight (I believe). At the time, SJU had an incredible run in recruiting the decade or so prior: Sealy, Lopez, Hamilton, Artest, Postell, Grant, Barkley, Jessie, Glover, etc. We were in the mix for anyone at that point...Darius Miles comes to mind.

Wright seems like he would have been a lifer at whatever big time program hired him first. Nova got a good one that's for sure.

I love the Big East. I have to admit, I'd love to have Uconn.

Have you watched them play this season? Hard to criticize a coach coming off a Championship but they do not look like a well coached team. They need more than just a conference change but between the conference and the coaching the future is not looking good (for them) and how could you make that change without at least another couple of seasons to justify it?

Yeah watched a couple of their games and they look like crap

Not sure if any of you have caught any of the "Men of March" shows they have been doing on CBSSports but basically they are 30 minute episodes that feature big time college coaches. They did one on Jay Wright that aired a couple of weeks ago and he finally opened up about being offered the Kentucky job, that was no rumor, that job was Wright's if he wanted it. Jay said Jim Valvano once told him, "you don't mess with happy." Jay Wright is a Philly guy, believe it or not Villanova IS his dream job. Luckily for Villanova and The Big East, Jay Wright is not going anywhere.

Bucknasty is dead on. Coach Wright ain't going anywhere. Neither is JTIII. Those are their dream jobs and both teams will be legit as long as that doesn't change. If we can get back to being a team that is top 25 or on the bubble every year, the conference will be pretty darn good and generate lots of attention with those three large markets. Because each year besides that core 3 you will have a couple of other very good teams among the xavier, prov, Marquette crowd.

If this conference can have St. Johns, Villanova, Georgetown and DePaul be perennial top 25 teams every year this will be a great conference.

It just shows how important chemistry and the right (not necessarily the best) players are to a team's success. To win a national championship, you have to be nearly flawless running a program, from recruiting, player discipline, x's and o's, motivating individual players and the whole team, getting the most out of your walkons/redshirts and end of roster guys in practice, scouting, game prep...all the way down to academics and travel arrangements. It's a very fragile thing and any one mistake can cost a team basketball immortality.

Ollie didn't go from nearly flawless to a bad coach overnight. His team this year is bigger, stronger, deeper, more experienced, have played together longer, and they are arguably more talented than last year's squad (at least from a recruiting rankings stand point with McDonalds AA Purvis, #17 RSCI Daniel Hamilton, and 1st Team Juco All-American, Sam Cassell), but they'll never find the same chemistry they had with Napier (#75 RSCI in 2010), Daniels (#32 RSCI in 2011), Kromah, and Giffey.

I think Uconn would be better off without Purvis (even with all his potential and talent) just like I thought we'd be better off without Sampson and think SH would be better off without Whitehead.

Although, I'll never again write Uconn off after the last two improbable National Championships. We were beating them by 30 in February of the first one...and six weeks later they couldn't lose to anyone.

I found your remark interesting that Conn would be better off without Purvis and SJU better off without Sampson.
I kept thinking today how much better off Pointer is without Sampson. Sampson's leaving might be his ticket to the NBA.

Fully agree with this and I think the league decision makers want to keep it this way. After last season they decided to stay at ten and to focus on scheduling a top OOC slate. The teams came through and won the OOC battle against the BCS leagues.

As local BE fans we need to pack MSG March 11-14. It is going to be great college basketball.

It is critical that this league shine during mid March to early April.

6-3 SG @Sacar_Anim15 will announce tomorrow. All signs pointing to Marquette, where he recently visited.

He is 4-star guard not a Top 100......but a Top 150 recruit. Probably comparable to Samir Doughty. Marquette has a decent 2015 class.

It's getting a bit sad how much friar fans talk about us

@AdamZagoria: Providence's LaDontae Henton named @BIGEASTMBB Player of the Week, Georgetown's Isaac Copeland named Rookie of the Week.

Should have been Dom IMO.

They hate us cause they ain't us

I don't get the hate for our players. People hate Harrison because of his tats and eyebrows. I can see the hate on Dom for the Hoya punch. One loa for the elbow. Our kids don't seem that bad to me, certainly no worse than most teams, but maybe it's my rose cords glasses. Providence mainly hates us because we have their number lately after they dominated us for what seemed like forever.

After the win against Providence at MSG I went to Stout for a couple of drinks. Surprisingly, it was mostly Providence fans. The ones I spoke to root for SJU when they aren't playing the Friars. Although I love our players, I can certainly see other fans not liking our guys and even thinking they were thugs for some of their past actions.
