Around the Big East

My premature look on Big East is super competitive, not many top 25 teams, low amount of NCAA bids due to teams knocking off one another regularly and just about every game a great watch. With Julian and a few more productive pieces I see no reason for SJU not to be in top tier of conference. This is our window of opportunity year to Dance, impress and turn more heads on recruiting front.

I don’t know about not many Top 25 teams Paultz? I think we need to wait until the season starts and see how the Big East does in these early season tournaments and OOC games. Shaka is bringing in a lot of good players at Marquette, UConn will be very good, Seton Hall has brought in some good players (that Yetna kid is a player), Providence has Watkins coming back along with most of there other players (Duke had a down year for them anyway), Nova will be Nova. So let’s see how it plays out. But, I agree, we have a real opportunity this year if we can bring a couple of more quality kids.

Thus the words “premature look” Gene :)

Guess my point was with so many teams relatively close in talent I can see potential cannibalism in BE play with records less than stellar throughout, with exception of Nova imo.

I don't think you can put all 10 teams outside of Nova in one bag.  I think a couple of teams are in significantly better shape roster wise going into next year then the others.

I agree. Right now it is Nova and then everyone else. I expect us to compete and be in that top half of everyone else.

Marquette transfer Theo John has committed to Duke, per his Twitter page. Should be a quality stabilizer up front for the Blue Devils.

This 10 and done recruited to counterbalance Duke 1 and dones?
In recent years it seems like they like to bring in a big man at the end of his career, and then barely play him. Hopefully John knows what he's doing.

Not one bag per se.  But questions abound.  And no one approaching Nova.  Long way to go.

Uconn is probably in that next tier between Cole, Gaffney, Jackson, Martin, Polley (when he returns), Sanogo, Whaley and the incoming class, which is supposed to be very good.  I expect improvement for many of those kids.  I don't know what that will mean losing Bouknight, and they were a much different team with Bouknight last year.  But I think it is fair to think they'll be near the top.

Hall will be good too I think.  They lose a huge piece in Sandro.  Rhoden is very good.  Ike is a presence for this league.  Cale returning helps.  Yetna seems like a good get.  I think their success hinges on the backcourt of Richmond/Harris, the two transfers they've brought in.  Their backcourt was a mess last year so they needed to change that dramatically, which they did.  The young kids coming in for them are supposed to be a good group, but we'll see how that plays.

Butler brings back all those seniors plus the young guards who were playing better at year-end.  Xavier lost some kids with talent (like Wilcher), but brought in the big from Iowa.  Scruggs coming back is significant because pairing him with Freemantle gives them two all conference type players.

I thought Providence should have been much better last year.  I believe Duke is officially gone, so that is a significant loss.  Watson returning is a force.  He also retained that PF I'm blanking on who seems like a pretty good player.   Forget what else they have coming in the door.

Creighton - who knows.  Georgetown lost a lot but brings in a good class.  Depaul who knows.  Marquette if Dawson returns theoretically could be good with Smart's kids following him, although I thought they'd be better last season.

I agree it is not "one bag".  And plenty of things still left to shakeout, including with our roster as it relates to Julian and the remaining two open ships we seem intent on filling.  I don't have any type of sense yet on how the above play out, with the exception of King Nova.  Unlike this year where I was very confident Nova/Creighton were 1/2 by a good margin, that Uconn with Bouknight was probably in the top 3/4, and that Hall was probably in the top 5 with Mamu.  I had Providence in that group too, as noted, but they underachieved IMO.

Not a good offseason for Creighton so far.

McDermott going to have a hard time recruiting with the plantation comments.  Might be time they moved on because they’re imploding for real.

Talk about an easy ticket;

Sources: Xavier, Memphis, Virginia Tech, and Iowa State will headline the 2021 Preseason NIT.

Not nearly the tournament it used to be.  I'm sure moving to Brooklyn didn't help.  Really was the first 5star pre season tournament.  I remember a Syracuse/Indiana game in the late 80's that was a lot of fun as Syracuse rolled them with a bit of Harlem Globetrotters mixed in.  Who remembers Sherman's long snap half court pass, I think it was to DC.

Didn't miss any of these games from '87 til I moved to LA 10 years later.  On the downside in order to keep my seats which would now be the equivalent of 2nd row section 116 I also had to go to the post season NIT.  ;)

IMHO reports of Creighton's demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Again, sorry to have to explain that my post was a joke based on another poster's repeated references to Creighton as an OOC game.  I hoped the laughing face would make that clearer. /media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png

Oh I got it - my post was not related to you, it has been a somewhat common sentiment on the site (and one that I think is way overblown)

McDermott is a great coach and seems to be getting good pieces.
