Seton Hall is retooling, but may be better than I thought next year:

And add Cale to this for next year, correct?

Totally forgot about Brandon Weston. I think he will be a good player for SHU.

A bad news day so far with our BE rivals strengthening. I frustrating but no need to be in panic mode since still very early in the game and I'm hoping for some good news soon.
One thing though: Kevin Willard is a very underrated coach imo.

We finished ahead of them this season. They are in our rear view mirror.

Seton Hall will be in the mix for a bid next year, just as they are every year. They've done a phenomenal job maintaining relevance.

Willard is a solid coach who has done a good job overall there.  Fans sometimes elevate opposing coaches too much or fail to give them enough credit.  He falls somewhere in the middle.  He's had a nice run where his team is generally pretty good and in the NCAA conversation.  He also has 1 NCAA win in 11 years.

Willard failed miserably in his recruiting for the 20-21 first year/transfer class.  The Molson kid was supposed to be a legit contributor, flamed out and is already gone.  The Long kid was recruited at the same time as Posh, and couldn't get on the floor, to the point where Shavar Reynolds was playing 30 minutes a game (and is now transferring to a lower tier school, it seems).  And they bet big on the Aiken kid who had a injury-riddled career and was an injury waiting to happen (which is what played out).  Because of those recruiting failures in the backcourt, Willard couldn't leverage Mamu and an experienced group last year to what should have been an NCAA team.  His incoming freshman class seems much better, but query how many of those kids end up staying with the transfers he's brought in.  What he was able to do is land Richmond and the Harris kid - who both seem like good transfers -- because they had a massive gaping hole in the backcourt and minutes galore available.  Both seem like good gets and I'd expect the Hall to be a pretty solid team next year again with those 2 kids, Rhoden, Cale and the big kid returning.

One thing I will say about Williard and his maintaining relevance, he's had a lot of luck along the way. First it was Angel Delgado returning for his senior season when he could have easily left as a junior. Same with Myles Powell a couple of years later. Now Cale returning for a 5th year.

Imagine if we had similar luck over the years? I won't count Mo Harkless because he got drafted. But we did have Jakarr Sampson and Shamorie Ponds leave without getting drafted. Imagine if either had stayed? Imagine if Rysheed Jordan had got his grades in order and stuck around 4 years? Our program could possibly be in a totally different reality than it is now, and maybe similar to Seton Hall's.....

Add Amir Garrett not going to play baseball, Rob Thomas not suffering a gruesome injury, Derwin Kitchen not leaving for Florida St. , Roshown McCloud not transferring to Duke, Tarique Owens staying and not going to Texas Tech, Dwayne Polee leaving for San Diego St. The list goes on and on. If just a couple of the situations that you and I have mentioned break our way , things might have looked a lot different now. This program has been cursed.

Great point on Willard and luck. He’s had some things break his way. But what’s helping him most is they’re winning games every year. We’re 2-3 years of success away IMo

You don't make 5 straight tournaments with luck. Willard is a good coach with a good staff, they keep reloading talent.

Seton Hall also does a good job of retaining talent. It makes it easier to reload if you aren’t always starting with an empty roster.

Now put away the pitchforks I’m not talking about CMA, who has only been at SJU for two years. But I always felt, and posted, that Mullins inability to keep any roster stability was very destructive to the SJU program.

Nowhere did I say it was ALL luck. He certainly has done a great job. Im just pointing out that he's had certain things break has way. Nothing more

Was thinking about this today...a recently as the Lavin days, SH was not even thought of in the same breath as SJ. But, taking the risk with Tiny set them on a path and, to Willard’s credit, he has made the most of it. Winning impacts perception of program.

I think we had built some momentum this season. But, the high volume of transfers will definitely be used by competitors.

In the end, I have high confidence in CMA to get it done. Funny that the initial criticism of the CMA hire (lack of local relationships), seems to be a strength.

He also managed to skate around whatever the hell was going on with Whitehead, Tiny and Andy Miller. If IW stays another year who knows what happens there. Why people judging coaches always need to look at the full picture. Willard was on the verge of being fired after 5 years at Seton Hall and the only reason he wasn’t is because they couldn’t do any better and the former AD was his buddy. He almost left for Holy Cross and after IW left flirted with the South Florida job the following season. Now in year 11 he has them on a good path, has proven to be a good coach and has consistently solid teams even though they’ve had no NCAA success. His team two years ago may have won multiple games in the dance, but he also may have jumped for greener pastures afterwards.
