Around the Big East

What an untenable position for a competitor like Sha. Hopefully a smart AD at reasonably endowed program will see past this NIL SH downfall and give him a shot. For those who say “he recruited these guys” understand no one can land BE level kids with no $ of substance to compete with.

We can celebrate our success, appreciate SJU NiL resources, but a few more BE implosions like SH will obviously weaken the league. If you only have quality endowed programs like UConn, Creighton, SJU, M”Q and suspect GT, the BE is in trouble re attendance for “walkover” games, quality wins available, etc.

As noted before by a poster, even tradition rich, well attended PC has to demonstrate recruiting NIL productivity. A relatively small BE compared to mega conferences really has to think strategically about adding well endowed programs while making hard decisions about situations like SH. Hopefully Ackerman is up to the task, but can’t say I’m confident about that. “Adapt or perish” seems apt.
Hall fans I know say they are the true NIL outlier right now. Even DePaul they say is in much better shape. Don’t know if that’s true. I have to think some of their higher profile kids like Dual, Middleton, Coleman etc got more than decent NIL packages.

Everything I’ve read says Xavier and PC are in good shape in addition to the schools you referenced like Nova, Gtown, Creighton, Marquette, UConn and us. Even Butler apparently is pretty good I’ve read.

Hard to know. I’ve read stuff that says Gtown is at or near the top.

It's crazy because they've generally been good over the past decade. Last year they should have been a tournament team. And then all of the sudden out of nowhere they literally hit rock bottom. I mean this is worse than the usual DePaul bottom feeding team. Just stunning and I generally do feel bad for their fans.
I don’t feel bad for any of them.

They didn’t hit Rick bottom “out of nowhere.” We poached the player who, along with another player who was poached, largely made them successful last year.

Concern for their fans comes across as highly hypocritical when we’ve made Kadary Richmond a key element of our success.

were all friend here ( for the most part lol)… can you or anyone translate “substance” to an actual dollar figure?

I’ve seen random amounts floated on X and by Trilly… if the 2mm$ ish payroll they had for this season is close to accurate… I don’t think they should be this* bad.

This is bball- u can win with a 7man rotation… from numbers floated , a team should be able to get a couple HM scorers for around the 500k mark… role players for around 150-300…

Tell me if I’m completely off base…

I know many of you don’t like the idea of donating…but this is the state of play right now. I would never tell someone how to spend their money (that’s Maher’s job), but i will say, if you can afford season ticks- u can afford a 10$ monthly sub to Storm Marketing. 5k fans at 120/yr=600k… we can pay for 3 good role players or 1 stud.

That money is worth what this type of season is giving us… IMHO…

Was watching some videos the other day and saw an eagle 🦅 sink it’s claws into a full grown leopard and fly away with it.

I saw the same thing and discarded it as a AI photo shop.
Full grown leopard weighs over 300 pounds and has jaw bite pressure of 130 pounds .
Doubt the Eagle could get the Leopard up
In the air and 1 bite from the Leopard would finish the Eagle .

But, I may be wrong .

"Definitive numbers are hard to come by, but Holloway is believed to be dealing with one of the smallest NIL war chests among high-majors – a total that was around $1.5 million last offseason (by comparison, most Big East programs are believed to be in the $3-5 million range)."

So in other words, we signed their best player for around 70% of their NIL budget.

I get that. But to go from a borderline tournament team to the worst team in the Big East by far, who gets blown out by everyone, because you lose your best player, should not immediately take you to rock bottom. And when I say "rock bottom", I mean literally the worst case possible scenario, which is what Seton Hall is right now.

I think the real question is, how much of Kadary's usage on offense at SHU covered up for Sha's coaching? Its impossible to tell because the talent on the roster isn't comparable. But Kadary is that level of player.

I hate to always be the guy who intercedes in the Holloway pity party, okay not really, but I feel the need once again to throw the towel. In college, unlike the NBA, the coach is not just a coach but basically a coach GM. And now with players getting paid over the table helping raise funds becomes part of the job for sure. For $2.4 million a year it's not asking too much for Holloway to be able to coax fans and donors to pony up. If there is no money, he is part of that problem.

I spent my career in Financial Services and worked with and around plenty of Stillman School of Business graduates. Many were very successful; it is a very highly regarded program. I don't get to audit friends and families' financials, but Mrs. IDRAFT has a cousin who might be the wealthiest person I know. I would estimate his Net Worth at well over $30 Million dollars, has his own hedge fund. He went to Seton Hall.

I agree money is part of winning now, but if you can't help in raising it you are in the wrong profession. I don't make the rules. And the irony is all those years on Willards staff Holloway had no problem finding under the table money. As any SJU fan knows.

Things change and karma can be a bitch.

I agree with the points you're making. In speaking to a Seton Hall fan/donor who is a friend of mine, Holloway is just not that guy. Just don't think it's his personality style to be able to solicit donations. And maybe that's Seton Hall's fault for not having the vision to see that.

Not a “pity party”, just happened to know a guy pretty well that works for him and another hoops guy who knows Holloway well from his days at St Peter’s who also touts forchis coaching ability and practice work.

Btw. there are a lot of coaches we have pulled for adept at “finding money under the table”. Most everyone cheats.

Thx for Stillman info.

Or SHU/Sha's fault for not hiring a GM.

Matt on Spaces basically said Rick doesn't like asking for money, so they have it down to a science where Rick will tell old stories about the Knicks & other things, leave the room, and then Matt goes for the hard money ask. That's not obviously including Matt's day-to-day work in general, but a very explicit example of why infrastructure and investing in it makes a big difference.

I agree with this, but also, people want to be in a room with Rick and he tells a good story. I admit it's only a vibe, but I don't get that vibe from Holloway. You can't solicit from an empty room.

Maybe I'm wrong on that - I'm not that close to it. However it's done they certainly need to get busy.
