Around the Big East

Hurley is an antagonistic jerk. Sure he’s a fine coach and all but he exhibits little class in wins and losses alike. His ego centric comments like “ don’t turn your back on me I’m the best f-ing coach in the country” recently said to an official is typical of his behavior.

Last season after beating the Johnnies in a close contest at the Garden he would go on to brag that the Garden was ‘s home away from home. That comment irked the crap out of me and many a St. John’s fan. It’s easy to see why he will continue to gain the kind of reception he had at Xavier.

You can criticise him all you want but our fan base would be thrilled to have him as our coach after Coach Pitino retires, warts and all.

As I stated above ….. he’s a fine coach….. I wanted him years ago when the school went on to make some of the poorest coach hires in its hoop history. But in my book, class accounts for something and watching this clown behave the way he does on the sidelines….. I’d pass.

I also wouldn’t really love having Hurley if Pitino moved on (not that it would ever be a realistic scenario) Pretty sure we’re clearly in the minority though which is understandable. I’d have a hard time arguing my point in any sort of logical way because the reasoning is so subjective & at this point you can’t really argue against Hurley’s on court success without being disingenuous. He wins 🤷‍♂️

I was much more critical of Hurley before the back to back national championships so I’m sure if he was here and winning at that level I’d swallow my more anecdotal, subjective criticisms and just bask in the glow of winning.

I think Hurley is a phenomenal recruiter, I think he is a great motivator & I think he knows how to energize a team and fanbase in a way that can carry them through important moments. I am not a fan of his personality, style or his nuts and bolts coaching. To me Hurley is a master of the macro (recruiting, motivation, energy of the program) and unspectacular at the micro (substitution patterns, drawing up an out of bounds play, coaching the final minutes of close games, etc)

If you want to argue those macro things are more important…I’d probably agree with you 😂

Hurley is a great coach. No one can or will argue that point. But he is in an environment at UConn that worships him, and winning has masked and allowed Hurley to continue behaving like an a**hole.

And the argument of his competitiveness is poppycock, because every successful coach is highly competitive.

While Hurley is only 50, his personality makes me think he will burnout much younger than most coaches of his stature.

Not to mention, as he comes to grips with with the fact his team his not anywhere near a final four contender, his behavior will only get worse. (Hold on Mullin’s Revenge, you will get your turn. No need to elbow me in order to cut the line).

The worst place for him to go is the NBA, where the pressure is obscenely intense and he has not built any good will. Hurley may even have difficulties coaching the blue bloods if he does not win immediately.

I would not want Hurley as coach here after Pitino (woah, I had to duck an incoming right cross from Mullin’s Revenge there). The school will get a good one when the time comes regardless.

"Another factor, said Stacom, is that this is a high-stakes business now, and Hopkins' family is “very involved” in the decision-making. Hopkins may have just one more season for a significant payday in his basketball career, and is likely to be paid $750,000 to $900,000 for this season, according to those close to the program."

Pitino, Holtmann and Cooley have been linked to Hopkins in the past.

Dunno that I would make that investment in a guy who hasn't played in 2 years, especially in transition to a new team / system. And I think Cooley is most likely candidate to do so.

Agree..id pass unless at very low discount or clauses based on # games healthy to play. Don't know if NIL has reached that type of contract yet or can require physicals before a signing.

I also don't really have a grasp of what our budget is, in terms of exact $. Is it so large that we can give him 750k and afford everyone back and have him as a super sub?

I don't think there are many, if any, teams in college hoops paying $750k to a non-starter unless it's a prized frosh on a top 10 program.

I think Hurley is a very good Coach . He’s become a great Coach at UCONN but , not sure his persona would track well elsewhere.
In many respects, he’s as annoying and unlikeable by opponents as Calhoun . But, that chip on the shoulder attitude they bring is perfect for the unlikeable and despised fan base they are .
Hurley’s bench conduct is unprofessional and much worse than Boeheim ever was .
But , he plays a very good game on dominating the Refs in nearly every game . He gets a lot of calls his team doesn’t deserve . Especially at home .
Sure, he’s a great recruiter but , benefits from UCONN being a State funded school . He’s very good at getting the 1 and done players , except this year . Plus , winning 2 Championships gets him a advantage too .

How much was Prey? Between the buy out and enough NIL to get him here, and within the context of money previously being set aside from Omier/Watkins, I wouldn't be shocked if he's closer to that number than you expect.
