Around the Big East

Jerry clearly didn’t see all the recruits we signed because our coaches weren’t distracted by something so unenjoyable like… checks notes… coaching basketball. That’s why ya gotta skip the NIT😂😂
I’m sure Pitino used that time to cozy up to NIL donors, watch film on prospective players, and formulate a plan.

You’ve got to watch tape on 100 kids in this landscape. And it can’t just be highlights.

No offense but some of you need to stop living in the past; new world. The time for militant reaction was immediately upon the announcement of this years‘ field and the BE failed miserably. Not sure that would have made a difference but doing nothing certainly wasn’t going to; not sure there is really a positive path forward anymore other than to try and join UConn as a power program that can’t be ignored.
Then again maybe John Fanta will let us in on Ackerman’s next step.

Spoke to a Big East source. Said Big East tried calling the Big 12 over and over and was basically ghosted. They are taking the approach that "it doesn't make any sense to play the Big East" and they'll still get double digit amount of bids or close to it. Big East had far more to gain from the challenge with the Big 12.

Coaches are happier because it'll give them more control of their schedule. Both the B10 with Gavitt Games and B12 with this challenge cited similar reasoning regarding the desire for more conference games. The Big East called and called and the B12 stopped picking up basically.

If we needed any more proof of the Big East brand rapidly deteriorating the last couple of years under Val, here ya go.

Who runs the B12?
Where did he cut his teeth?
What has been rumored for awhile in terms of him and the BE?

Makes all the sense in the world to them. Coaches don't want to be honed in on their schedules with the expansion of the conference in the short-term, and the long-term play is, make the BE a non-power conference entity and plunder it for their richest resources (UCONN, Villanova, and us + Georgetown)

Assuming the committee keeps using the same criteria (which it shouldn't), this actually isn't terrible. Playing tough games against middle of the pack (or lower) high major teams doesn't move the ball as much as it should come tourney time. Playing Michigan, BC, WV did zero for us . Instead, you need to crush terrible teams and beat the top teams at the low majors. We have to play Vermont, UMASS Lowell, the best team in the NEC, Colgate, the top team in the WAC, etc.

I am sure a lot of people saw this coming. More conference games for the Big 4 Conferences due to their size, the bigger programs still want the ability to schedule (at least the bigger programs) some national non-conference games along with scheduling a couple of cupcakes. And, of course it also screws a non Big 4 Conference so what the hell.

Jerome Tang was critical of the series this year. Not surprised

Sorry but I don't blame he and I understand. He has twenty conference games, they will be wars. So yes, he is going to want to play a cupcake or two also besides another tough regional/national game or two.

The bottom line now is that if a Big East team is not ranked , they’re not making the Tournament. All the at-large bids will go to the football 🏈 conferences. You could say that the biggest mistake made was when Ed Marinetto or whatever the guys name was , failed to cut a deal with ESPN for TV rights which caused ESPN to retaliate by forcing the breakup of the Big East and making the football schools separate. I know at the time, we as basketball fans loved it but if the conference was still comprised of those same teams we would be ok .

There will still be plenty of OOC games in the future. The Big East will easily find ways to play top teams and create profitable games at their large and attractive venues. There are also the Holiday Tournaments that will never disappear.

It will be interesting to learn what discussions take place at the upcoming NCAA Oversight Committee that Cooley sits on. Cooley is no pushover like that stiff Collier. Has Collier said anything about why he caved on his league?
