Around the Big East

I remember in the early 1980s, the Big East threatened to bounce Seton Hall, unless they got their act together. They hired P J Carlesimo, spent some more money, and moved home games into Brendan Byrne Arena.
The conference can't afford to carry DePaul much longer. Maybe this hire will work out, but that press conference was sad.
You’re comparing apples and oranges. The Big East had a thriving NYC team in the media capital, a huge (for that time) media package with ESPN/CBS and the Big East had a good football program to go along with our top notch basketball program. We could afford to throw out Temple n football and the Hall.

Those things are not true now. Big East needs the Chicago market (again it isn’t the number of eyeballs on DePaul but the numbers in the market of potential viewers that the Big East would have access to which boost the value of media rights deal). I agree we need a stronger DePaul but they are nor should be in no danger in getting kicked out.

Regarding De Paul you don’t want to lose the Chicago market but you do want to do something to turn around their poor performance. The big10 dolls out their tv money based on performance.
Rutgers does not get the same amount of money that Ohio St. and Mich get because they haven’t earned it Would holding back funds get De Paul to shape up or result in even poorer performance?

Nice article on Holtmann, glad DePaul landed him. Just don't expect any miracles this season.

“You have to find kids you can lose with first,” he said. “You are looking for kids that can be there with you in the good times and the bad and keep working and just put one foot in front of the other. They (will) be our foundation.”

85, the status quo is unacceptable. Few, in or out of Chicago, watch their games or go to their games. All our games are national telecasts and people want to watch talented teams, star coaches and arenas packed with animated fans. Dayton and Gonzaga would be examples of schools from small towns that have big followings.

If he wants to find kids he can lose with I have good news for him, he's got them already.

I don’t disagree about the state of DePaul’s basketball or that it needs no change just the fact the removal of DePaul despite that is not going to happen. Again this has nothing to do with DePaul, it is about where there are located and that market. It has nothing to do with their following, it’s the access the Big East gains and that market is bigger than Dayton’s and Gonzaga’s combined. It is the big reason Rutgers is in the Big 12. Not for their football prowess but because of they are located in the NY/NJ market and gives them that access which helps their media rights including their own network.

Final point, DePaul is at least investing in their program, back then Seton Hall was not and it took PJ several seasons to turn it around. In fact, if he doesn’t make the season he had when they made the final four, he might have been fired.
