Around the Big East

No doubt, despite his ability & track record, his rising intensity level makes burnout quite possible. So many fans are assholes and do stupid, taunting things, but you have to tune them out. Channel your alpha personality to bitching at refs, media v loony fans. Probably easier said than done with Hurley though.

It seems likely his shelf life may be shorter than Izzos, Selfs of the world unless he loses the rabbit ears.
True. But all of the successful coaches are alphas. Someone like Izzo is not any less alpha because be doesn’t challenge college kids to a fight.

Hurley tries too hard to push his tough guy act. A real alpha doesn’t have to prove they are one.

I honestly think Hurley isn't trying to prove anything. He's just a hot head who can't control his emotions in the heat of battle.
I feel similarly which is why his insistence on showing little to no remorse or accountability is disappointing.

he still has some growing up to do. I hope self reflection is in the cards for him at some point

Though I will say UConn being the “big bad guys” coming off their championship, along with his combative personality during games, is undoubtedly a bad mix

He's been very public about going to therapy and working on things.

My read on him is that he's very self-aware and actually pretty mature, in terms of being a leader of young men.

But I wouldn't expect him to admit to be making a mistake when it comes to this stuff. How many coaches at this level can do that? To be this great at this level requires a massive ego that none of us can truly relate/understand.

I meant in terms of him self reflecting on his actions during games.

I have seen him discuss his focus on mental health and I think that is admirable.

But he becomes another man entirely during games. And as an adult I think you need to be able to recognize that and reconsider how to maintain that fire/passion without embarrassing yourself consistently.

I say this all the time about Hurley, it feels like he’s one bad loss away from doing something that is going to stick with him forever. Is it far fetched to think if he doesn’t tone it down a little bit, we could see a game where he puts hands on a ref or fan? Cause I don’t think it is.

He’s never doing any of that. He’s been awarded for the behavior — literally and figuratively— and he is on a HOF trajectory it’s part of the full package.

It’s like hoping Pitino is less of a sore loser. Not only is it not happening but it’s part of what makes him great

I also think Hurley is not bob knight. That guy seemed to have really really really deep seeded stuff. I fundamentally don’t get that vibe from Hurley. He’s just loud New Yorker (New Jersey)

Ehhh, sure he’s successful and has been rewarded to this point. That doesn’t take away from what I’m saying.

He can be a winner and continue to be a winner, but I still personally see a man who’s one wrong move from doing something that’ll unfortunately become a part of his story when it’s all said and done.

And maybe we differ on this but I don’t think his jawing with fans after games makes him “great”. People may enjoy the theatrics, not me. And I promise I’d say the same if he were St. John’s coach. He can be a winner and be great without that extra shit

Hurley has real issues, and he is open about that. Basically, he seems incapable of happiness. His very real personality flaws (and I'm not saying he's a bad guy - humans can be complex) seem to assist him in being a great college basketball coach. Good for him, but I wouldn't want to be him for one day. But that goes for a lot of college basketball coaches, not just Hurley.

I'm a loser, but I'm content with it.

I definitely don't think he'd ever lay hands on someone. I think that stuff happens when someone has a very serious anger problem, like Bob Knight. Hurley is just really intense. The fact that he can be vulnerable about it in a public setting, also have a sense of humor about himself, and go to therapy is miles ahead of other people. His persona reminds me a lot more of Frank Martin -- someone who's crazy but never went over the line.

Hurley's intensity makes him great. I don't think jawing after fans makes him great but it's a (negative) symptom of the main trait that does. I don't think you can remove one part of it without the other.

It’s a part of the job. Fans say all kinds of stuff. Bite your tongue and ignore it.
He should know better than to jump in the ring with a drunk fanboy.
I saw a game there where a fan was merciless on Mullin. You suck Mullin, you are a terrible coach, go back to California, you’re garbage. Mullin didn’t even blink.

Interesting. Yea I similarly view him sort of in that Frank Martin tier, but Martin never got a program quite to the stage of dominance that Hurley has gotten Uconn. And with that, comes a heightened ego, paired with his persona… makes him a fascinating case for me in that I do worry he could cross a line at some point.

I'll put it this way. If Hurley is a free agent coach after flaming out in Brooklyn, the hiring committee at any university is having that conversation. .... and then offering him the highest contract in college basketball after 30 minutes

I dunno. In being open about his mental health issues, he mentions his wife is essentially his rock, which is great. Thinking just maybe she can share feedback on how he's coming across and advise him to mature a bit in some regard. Passion and fire is great, acting like an immature lunatic, especially being incapable of tuning out trolling fans, is not cool.
