Around the Big East

With my luck we’ll add Davidson the year after my wife convinces me to move back to Jersey!
I get that same comment from my Wife all the time . I remain mute, a difficult task for me , until I turn on the Weather Channel in February and show herJim Cantore , holding on to a light pole in a Blizzard .
It’s quiet then for a few months and then , it starts again .

While all this is pure speculation and some wishful thinking on our part , anything is possible in this day and age .

Gonzaga and St Mary’s would be very nice additions , With Air travel what it is today and Charter Flights the norm , scheduling issues could be resolved . East Coast teams could play both on 1 trip. A Thursday and Saturday or Sunday afternoon game and then fly home in time for classes.

The same for the West Coast Schools . Play a Thursday game against us and a Sunday game against Seton Hall or Nova and fly home .

The same could be done for the other Schools .

Both Gonzaga and St Mary’s have built excellent Programs . But, they haven’t had the top to bottom competition that the BE would provide . Just saying

I agree they would be great additions and travel for basketball with charters help but the big problems come with the non-revenue sports that usually don’t have access to charters and even if they do, the further and increase travel costs adds to their lower budgets even more so for Gonzaga and St. Mary’s who will be making a lot more trips to further distances than say we or Providence would.

FYI, Denver who has very good Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse programs and both play in the Big East Conference (Denver, St. John’s, UConn, Georgetown, Marquette and Providence men and Denver, Georgetown, UConn, Marquette, Villanova Butler and Xavier women).

St. Mary's is rumored to be their traveling partner if they go Big 12.
I doubt that , either Gonzaga or St Mary’s could even field a decent team in football . Ever .

But , if they join for BB only that could work . But , so could the BE . Just let them join for BB .

Where they would go for their other sports or Women’s sports , i have no idea .

Neither Gonzaga or St. Mary's has a football team. Some schools will have one or two sports in another conference if their conference doesn't have the sport or there is a significant difference in competition. I guess it's possible but it seems unlikely that Gonzaga and St. Mary's would have their basketball program in one conference and all their other sports somewhere else.

It’d likely be full membership for all the sports. The travel won’t be nearly as costly as it would in the Big East.

It’s going to be very interesting to see what the Big 12 could get with their separate basketball-only contract. If they do really well (I.e. better than the big east), that can be the first signs of an existential threat to the big east.

That's my concern with this whole thing....

This is great news. As much as I loathe UCONN, I prefer them in the Big East to the Big 12. Being able to add Gonzaga and St. Mary's is sweet. Let's hope the ADs in the Big 12 continue to push back on the basketball only schools.
