Around the Big East

John Fanta

“Creighton is different and younger, and yet Greg McDermott has this team playing like an NCAA Tournament squad. They’re getting it done with size. The duo of Ryan Hawkins and Ryan Kalkbrenner combine for 38 points and 24 boards as the Jays win at Marquette in 2 OT. CU is 10-3.”

Best offensive HC in BE imo.

Nova vs. Seton Hall is a good back-and-forth game.  Hate to say it, but watching these BE teams over the last few days does not make me feel good about our ability to rip off a quick couple of wins.  League looks strong.

Am watching Seton Hall/Nova game. Very disturbed that Seton Hall only has 8 players available. Not sure how many other schools are playing short handed. If this trend continues, it is going to be a wasted season. All it takes is a couple of positive tests at the wrong time.

As much as I love basketball, playing under these circumstances is nonsensical.

If Aiken can take Gillespie off the bribble, I expect posh to do so readily.

SH VS. NOVA.  Great game.  Two well coached teams.

SH deserves lots of credit for a real gutsy performance.   Wish they didn't have to play under such difficult circumstances.

Wright clearly took advantage of SH big man void and offensive rebounding differential in Nova’s favor spoke volumes in that regard. Not a vintage Nova team, but always extremely well prepared.

As much as I love the competitive Big East, I just don’t seen any conference team as an Elite Eight Dance level participant. Early obviously, but just my sense of things.

We talk about one of the surprises in college basketball, Creighton. But here’s why you shouldn’t be that surprised - the Jays have won 20+ games in 21 of the last 23 years. The only teams with more than CU in that stat: Duke, Kansas, Gonzaga.

It's been mentioned on here many times, but that was a perfect addition by the Big East. Couldn't have worked out any better in the years since they were added. Even following the McDermott scandal last year, they haven't missed a beat.

Any talk of the next school to join the Big East should begin by looking at who could potentially be the next Creighton.

A school that rhymes with Creighton-Dayton.

That's exactly who I was thinking when I wrote that comment.

We better win tomorrow night.  Don't we play Providence next, after a 35 point plus beatdown by Marquette? Oh boy.

AJ Reeves, their best three point shooter, will be out.  They’re not a great three point shooting team to begin with.  I think we have a chance, but one game at a time.

Seton Hall announces that the Monday, January 24 game vs St. John’s at Walsh Gymnasium will be a students only game. As a result of the gym’s limited capacity, a lottery will be conducted to issue tickets to SHU students. It’s the first Big East game at Walsh since March 2, 1985.

Smart move Covid safety wise for students, but also having 1200 screaming students will create better advantage for Hall.

Providence not a great team. Playing well because they are 5th year senior laden. While it gives them an advantage right now, it may not last all year.

They are very beatable.
