Around the Big East

I'm sure it's a beautiful facility, but every time the camera's pan around Nova's Finn Pavilion, with all those angles, I feel like I'm gonna get dizzy or a headache
By every stretch of imagination, Villanova's refurbishment of the old (formerly DuPont) Pavillion was grade A in every respect.  I went there with my daughter and sat with JSJ and his niece two years ago (just before Covid went nuts).

Villanova had the money (Finneran donated $20 million+ without asking for control) to build a new arena, but Radnor community balked at increased traffic caused by a larger facility, so they scaled back and did a $70 million makeover.   They raise about $100 million annually without a capital campaign (last one was 2014) from a much smaller, albeit from a wealthier and more engaged donor base.

Not surprisingly their student section behind the basket is massive, packed, and loud, with what appears to be a pretty equal number of male and female students.    Everything in the place was done over - concessions, seats, bathrooms, meeting spaces.   It's hard not to be envious but is a sign of what a little Catholic School can do with some money.

As far as a small but big-time college arena, look no further than the Cintas Center at Xavier. Real seats, generous student sections behind both baskets, wide stairways and corridors, plenty of, er, restrooms, good and affordable food, "hall of fame" area, souveneir/fan shop. We had a great time there, except the Redmen lost.

Agree on Cintas Center... I was not there for a game, but did take my daughter there on college campus visit a few years ago.  They hosted and Open House at the Cintas Center...  The arena had a great feel to it.  Holds 10K seats.   Never happens on campus and shouldn't need to if we can perform and fill MSG for more than a handful of conf games.

My memory is that Jarvis hire by Jordan broke down over Jarvis wanting to take Deuce with him.
Oh wait, you are partially correct.   I remember now.  What he supposedly wanted was SJU to give his son the HC job should he leave.   .

When BE says the forfeit rule is rescinded effective immediately, does that mean for all BE games starting today and Seton Hall forfeit still stands?

Big East has not rescinded the Covid forfeit rule, just that they might reconsider it.  If they do rescind it, it will probably be retroactive and therefore the forfeits by Seton Hall and Depaul would no longer stand.

The two great "what-ifs" in St. John's coaching history.

1. What if Jarvis left for the Wizards job and we hired Jay Wright?  (Our job would have been open a year before Nova's was, and my guess is he would have taken it.)

2. What if we hired Bob McKillop instead of Norm Roberts?  He'd still be here and he'd likely be closing in on several St. John's coaching records by now.  We'd consider him right behind Looie and Lapchick in St. John's history.

May be time to let this stuff go :)

Sometimes we do need to:

But when you see the success Villanova has had with Wright and the lack of success we've had with all of those who came since Wright has been at Nova, well its hard man.

Was McKillip ever genuinely interested in coming here? I do have to wonder that, seeing as he's still at the same school he's been at all those years ago, and no other school got him to leave.

Yes he was genuinely interested in coming here before we hired Fran Fraschilla and Mike Jarvis.  He was more of a serious candidate the second time around.  He was definitely interested in returning home where he grew up, went to college (Hofstra), coached (Holy Trinity and LuHi) and coaching in the Big East.

I'm with Paultz.
At this point there's a good argument to be made for moving this stuff to the Old Guys Talking Hoops thread - it certainly has nothing to do with "around the big east," anyway

Tuesday's game between Creighton and Georgetown has been canceled due to issues related to COVID-19 within Georgetown's program

The only problem I have with this is that I don't think Curry becomes Curry if he doesn't end up with McKillop. I live in Oakland and have enjoyed a long stretch of winning basketball./media/kunena/emoticons/grin.png
