Around the Big East 19/20

Just read that LeBlanc and Akinjo are leaving the program. LeBlanc had some kind of ongoing issue with another student, but no word on what Akinjo's deal is.
They just lost a lot of talent in my opinion. Glad I got tickets for the game in DC, maybe we'll win this one.
interesting that Akinjo isnt involved in any police report, wonder what his situation is
It sounds like Akinjo may just wanna get back west. I heard he almost transferred at the end of last season. Never know these days, as there could be some tampering.

I was also told he and LeBlanc became good friends during their brief stint at Georgetown. So, maybe he bailed once LeBlanc left. There was also a point during G'town's game on Saturday versus UNC-G where Ewing pulled Akinjo as he was playing quite erratically. Akinjo looked to be visibly upset when the TV camera panned towards the bench. That's not always a bad sign, as a player could be upset with him or herself as well. The thing that really stuck out was Akinjo seemed aloof during a timeout.

The writing may have been on the wall for Akinjo to transfer. It probably happened expediently after LeBlanc's departure.

I’m not so sure. I think he was booted too. i guess time will tell the truth, but either way it’s a mess there.

I never understood why players transfer mid season. You end up losing a half season of eligibility at least.

Yeah, should have at least waited until the semester ends. The earliest he will be able to play will be the second semester of 2020-21, so he's essentially giving up nearly a month of games by quitting now.

That leads me to believe he was forced out.

Yep, Leblanc & Alexander accused of Burglary and Gardner accused of Sexual Harassment & Assault.

This is an opportunity to look back and thank Norm for setting the frame work for recruiting exemplary student athletes to St. John's which has continued to this day. We have to remember that ours sons & daughters are on these campuses and wouldn't want this to happen to them if true. So when recruiting, just remember that winning at all cost is not winning.

Yes, we need to thank norm for his 12 win seasons.
That's laughable.

Good summary of the Georgetown matter with a criticism of GT initially lumping Akinjo and LeBlanc together in transfer announcement. As Dink noted, Akinjo had nothing to do with legal issues noted above.

Since this is still being discussed see above about Akinjo.
Thanks, the Tweet in that article states it was Akinjo's personal decision. Not sure how accurate the source is, but we'll go with that until we hear more.

Very strange decision on Akinjo's part, given that second semesters start in January rather than December. He's wasting a month. The only thing I can think of is he's trying to get a hardship waiver to start right away next year, and is leaving the same time JL was forced out. Good luck with that...

Letter from Georgetown AD noting Akinjo not involved in allegations involving LeBlanc;

Dear Basketball Supporter,

Many of you have been following recent news regarding our Men's Basketball Team. Yesterday, we announced that two students, James Akinjo and Josh LeBlanc, will not be members of the team for the remainder of the season as they have expressed an interest in transferring from the University. Separately, allegations were reported publicly against three members of the team. The allegations do not involve James Akinjo.

While Georgetown refrains from commenting on individual students in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), we take student conduct issues very seriously. Alleged conduct violations are investigated and adjudicated by the Office of Student Conduct through a fair and equitable process. Both the complainant and the accused student are given the opportunity to provide written and oral statements along with any relevant evidence before disciplinary actions are taken. Student-athletes are subject to the same disciplinary policies and procedures contained in the Code of Conduct that apply to any undergraduate or graduate student.

Once the student conduct process is completed, and if sanctions are imposed by the Office of Student Conduct, coaches may impose additional disciplinary actions, including removal from the team. When students report concerns for their safety, the University takes immediate action and offers a range of options and supportive resources for students, which may include putting in place no contact orders between members of the campus community, filing a complaint with the University or the Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD), safety planning with GUPD, police escorts for students, counseling and other support services - all to ensure complainants are safe on campus. If the University determines that a student poses an immediate threat to the safety or security of students or of the community, the University would take immediate action to remove the student from campus.

Please know that we are deeply committed to the integrity of our athletics program. All student athletes are required to complete a four-tiered education model on interpersonal violence and sexual assault. Coach Ewing has taken additional steps to ensure a culture of responsibility and integrity within our Men's Basketball Team.

We seek to develop the talents, character and leadership qualities of all student-athletes and members of our community. We aspire for our student-athletes to exemplify the excellence and integrity of the Georgetown community and will continue to work to achieve this mission.

Sincerely,
Lee Reed
Director of Intercollegiate Athletics

Did this go out to just Basketball Supporters or to all of the Athletic Supporters that make up the G'town community?

My guess is maybe Akinjo just wanted to get out of dodge. I know I would. Unfortunately, it’s the people who are left and had nothing to do with the situation that have to deal with the after effects. Like at SJU after the nonsense at the strip club in Pittsburgh or the players at Penn State who had nothing to do with the abuse that occurred.

I would also argue that any kid at Georgetown who was not involved in the situation should be allowed to transfer and be eligible Immediately NEXT season. They didn’t sign up to be involved in this. The NCAA did allow for transfers in the wake of the Penn State scandal so their is precedent.

The Akinjo transfer will be one to watch as it is similar to Steele unless he is going to claim family illness as reason to transfer and apply for eligibility immediately.

I would be surprised if there is not pressure from some alums and community people with clout to suspend Alexander and Gardner, two remaining players noted in legal process, pending internal review disposition.

At minimum Ewing needs to be suspended here. Case can be made for a lot more than that too.

During the "Hoya Paranoia" period would John Thompson have been able to keep this from going public?

Shouldn't be that great of a surprise. Same school recruited Michael Graham, Allen Iverson and a few other shady characters over the years. Just win baby.
