Around the Big East 19/20

Providence has good size, talented returnees, but no point guard. Big problem.

Are they good?

A few good weeks doesn't erase decades of ineptitude IMO
You could say the same about us. DePaul has the pieces , let’s see if they can put them together. But, they’re not far off. Let’s see if they can win this games in a tough place to play on the road, The Barn in Minnesota
Not sure what us has to do with them. Nobody is anointing us as back either. We've seen NCAA's a lot more recently than they have as well.

So again lets see DePaul sustain this a wee bit longer.
DePaul and Butler were supposed to be our competition for last place, this year, but they're the only two unbeaten teams left in the league. 3 wins or less in the Big East is still very probable this year, and I say that being mostly satisfied with what I've seen from the team, so far.

DePaul up 10 at the under 8, but frankly, Minnesota looks like a broken basketball team right now, in all phases.
3 wins or less is very probable? Can’t wait to revisit this later in the season. We’ll have our struggles at times, but will be quite a bit better than this.

Providence is done. They have almost no shot at making the Tournament, which is shocking to say in November. Sucks for their fans, especially after giving Cooley a massive 10 year deal this off-season.

That said, everyone else (besides us) is off to a good start. Johnnies are off to a decent start, but as expected given our low expectations.

I would give Nova, Georgetown and Creighton “decent” grades, as well. Nova hasn’t beaten anyone, Georgetown should not get whipped by Penn St, and Creighton got their heads handed to them by San Diego St. Good thing is, G’town and Creighton each have a good win to help offset the pain of those beat downs.

My definition of "good" would be on track to make the Tournament (or at least the bubble). Nova, Creighton and Georgetown are currently on track. Nova actually has the worst resume of the 3, but they'll probably do better rest of the way given their recruits. They also have a great RPI at #26, which just shows how tough their schedule has been.

Side note: it's too bad we'll need to wait another month for NET. Don't like using RPI, but it should be in the same ballpark at least.

I just look at some of these other Big East teams, and wonder where the wins are going to come from. It's more a refelection of the conference this year, then it is a reflection of us, IMO.

Frankly, I think our Johnnies is off to an "alright," start as well. I wouldn't call it "great" nor "poor."

The only conference team that's off to a poor start would be Providence, and they still have a chance to turn their season around. Too early to say their season is done.

I'm not even a betting man, but barring any significant injuries, then I'd be willing to bet we'll win more than 3 conference games.

We have a long season still ahead, and to say this or that team is gonna do this and we ain't gonna do that is a bit too much at this stage of the season. I'd have thought we've looked like downright crap if I didn't know any better.

EDIT: I think the Hoyas may have their hands full today with UNC-Greensboro.

Earlington, Roberts, and Champagnie have far exceeded expectations. Dunn became eligible . If Steere plays like advertised and Heron gets out of his funk, I think we can be ok. We’re not going to make the tourney, but I think we will win more then 3 games. If MA has another winning season, I would consider it a success. Figgy is a nice college player, but doesn’t look like an NBA player at this point , not sure why everyone assumes he will be gone are this year.

People I think aren’t giving enough credit to these guys. No we aren’t the most talented of the big East teams but we play pretty well as a team. In addition our frontcourt keeps getting stronger which is something we haven’t been able to say at SJU in a long time. Add Steere and our young forwards keep improving and we can be formidable up front with a couple of wing scorers as well. I don’t think we are relegated to the bottom.

From what I observe, is that we cannot count on Heron or Figueroa to show up consistently on offense. Neither an alpha scorer, they need to be setup, with so-so guards. Need Rutherford to step up a bit more,

Bump!

UNC-G up by 2 (61-59) with 23 seconds remaining and possession of the ball.

Hoyas with possession down by 4 with 13 seconds left in the game.

NC Greensboro beats Hoyas, Dink smiles. UNCG has a solid coach in Wes Miller.

:)

seems like G'town got away with so many no calls and very favorable officiating and UNCG just hung tough even when their two best players got brutalized and knocked out of the game.
