Agree with Dinkins at the end of regulation. Stay solidly between your man and the basket and as soon as the player, in this instance McClung puts the ball on the floor, foul as it bounces back up from the floor.
Here’s my thing and I’m not saying you’re wrong. My view is this. You’re up 3 with under five second left. You don’t foul and the worst case is you lose in overtime. You do foul and the worst case is you lose in regulation.
I guess you are referring to a possible 4 point play which is why I said you wait until the player dribbles to foul; you can’t shoot while you’re dribbling so no possibility of a 4 point play. I agree to foul or not is no easy call though.
A four point play, 3 foul shots, or even just 2 free throws like we just saw at end of SH/Marquette game. Marquette chose to foul (did it great, 3 seconds left with McKnight’s back to the hoop and inside the 3 point arc), McKnight hits the first and then anything can happen on the 2nd missed free throw. A tip in for 2, a tip out for 3, a foul? Of course the chances any of those happening may be slim but so are the chances of Mclung banging in a 40 footer which still only forced game into OT and doesn’t alone beat you. Again I don’t think there is 100% one righ or wrong way and each is situation is different but I don’t agree with the blanket statement of foul up 3.
