Around the Big East 18/19

I wasn’t sure which thread to put this but looking at the Big East overall as far as stars go, some things surprised me.

First off, as far as scoring offense goes, SJU and Creighton are tied for #1. Villanova is actually dead last. Did not expect to see that.

What did surprise me was some of the categories we as SJU fans punish our team for. SJU is at or near the top in most offensive categories.

Defensively SJU is #2 overall in FG % defense. We actually are holding teams better than I thought.

“SJU can’t guard the 3-point line”... well, amongst our peers, we actually rank #4 amongst the 10-team Big East in 3-pt percentage defense! Could it be? Well it’s true.

Our rebounding. We are last in offensive rebound which isn’t surprising. What is surprising is that we rank #4 in defensive rebounding and #1 in defensive rebounding %.

Apparently teams are just shooting better from 3 because statistically our defensive numbers are nowhere near what I thought they’d be. Even if we played 2 or 3 tough teams instead of some of the ones we did play, I don’t think the stats would have changed all that much, and that’s considering we have actually been lackluster in our fan’s eyes for much of the early season. Overall besides offensive rebounding, our numbers are excellent.

Wagner and St. Francis a combined 14-59 from 3 the last two games, and Wagner made three or four at the end of the game, after the outcome had been decided.

We're still allowing too many attempts (although most teams shoot at least 20 a game now). Fortunately, the last two teams we played were ice cold (although we did limit the number of open looks).

Being cold from the field by the opposition and turnovers by the opposition is also due to fatigue/conditioning. Our pace of play on offense has been strong for most of the season so far. Our defensive efforts in the second half of games and especially in the last two (2) games has improved tremendously. Our style of play can help fatigue the opposition!!!! Our kids on in outstanding shape. remember when Mullin first got hired he focused a significant amount of the conversation on conditioning.

Thanks for posting. Will make sure to catch the Buffalo-Marquette game.

Our New Year's Day match up with Marquette could be an awesome game between two ranked teams if we both take care of business. Rooting for the Golden Eagles in this one against Buffalo. CA should be an awesome environment.

They are 2 and a half point favorites, and BPI gives Marquette about a 60% chance of victory. I guess they are still not buying Buffalo, even after road wins at West Virginia and Syracuse (not that the latter victory looks really impressive, right now).

How is that not buying Buffalo? Only 2 1/2 point favorite at home.

Providence opened as 9.5-pt road dogs at Texas for tonight's game. Seems a lot of points to give with Texas somewhat inconsistent.

Home court usually worth at least 3 points so basically a pick-em game. Makes sense given records and match-up at this part of the season.

I don’t know why people say we didn’t play anybody. We beat VCU which beat Texas ( at Texas) and was one minute away from beating UVA (at UVA) while they’re in the top 100.

Then we beat Georgia Tech (another top 100 team) which just beat Arkansas in Arkansas.

This is so annoying.

All the questions about our strength of schedule will be answered once we play a few BE games.

Not really up tp snuff with this but perhaps those teams that you mentioned are bottom dwellers in ther conf that is just a speculation not knowing for sure but our overall body of work does in include top 25 teams. I hope they do well but can’t help but be worried when conf start and our rebound disadvantage comes up to bite us during most of our games.under the circumstances ,think for us to get 10 wins we will have to have a Very good games since there will be no room for error unless we shoot lights out which we are capable but consistency of rebounding ,shooting and defense will tell the story if we dance or not

I hope they get crushed by Maryland. You have to read their board. I’m putting them on the complaint thread. They let the UK win over a poor UK team get to their heads....

Can't blame them, it's their team. To be fair, Lord knows we'd be doing the same thing if we beat Kentucky. We'll get a chance to shut them up next week.
