Around the Big East 18/19

Govan was at another level from everyone else on the court but disappeared for major stretches partly him and partly the bad decisions of the dog guards. Akinjo saved the game at the end of reg but was also responsible for a lot of bad decisions, plays and slop.
USF could have put the game away multiple times but just couldn't. The Govan elbow to that kids nose also changed the course of the game. Funny how so many of the bumps and slaps to the face by Georgetown are ruled "incidental contact."

Michigan pounding Providence, leading by 21 with a minute left. Impressive team.

Have to agree with Rothstein

“Every single marquee Big East non-conference game for the rest of the season becomes massive for the league. Have to move the needle to get more than a few teams into the NCAA Tournament.”

Scary how the state schools dominate, and not just the state flagships..

Only Duke, Gonzaga & TCU are private institutions
State schools certainly have an advantage being funded by taxpayer $!
90% of the taxpayers wouldn't want their tax dollars going to fund sports instead of academics. Some semi pro programs like Alabama, Texas, and a dozen others are likely self funded but 350 other D1 programs likely lose money to keep up with the Jones.
Thus far schools like Villanova, Marquette and Providence have underperformed and hurt the entire league. Mullin and St. John's have a unique opportunity to get the major attention this year.

I wouldn't panic just yet. Marquette will definitely be good. Plus, Cooley and Wright are too good to let their teams tank. By the time we play Nova and Providence they will be formidable.

How can you say so confidently Marquette will be good? I really don't understand the love they get/got. They have to replace Rowsey'a contributions from an okay team. I think we clearly have the higher ceiling and our floors are pretty close too.

I don't maybe I'm missing a transfer they got or something. Creighton looks better to me.

I agree, they're probably overhyped. Not sure how they started the season as a Top 25 team. That said, I watched them against Bethune-Cookson (I know, not exactly a blue blood), and came away impressed. Howard and the two Houser brothers are tough. They have Kansas next, so we'll learn a lot more. I,too, would say we have more talent. My point is that, depsite an awful start, I am not ready to bury the league just yet.

Btw.......I have not seen Creighton at all this year. But, McDermott is another guy that will find a way.

I think we have about half the teams in our league who have either lost a number of key players or have brought in a number of new players who need to be an integral part of their rotations. I believe that all of these teams will continue to improve as the season progresses. The problem is that these tough early season OOC games count immensely as far as the NCAA Selection Committee is concerned. Our teams will improve especially as they move into conference play but I don’t know how that will equate come selection Sunday with all these OOC games being played as these Big East teams are sorting things out.

Gotta just worry about ourselves this year. The league is rebuilding and weak, but I don’t think we are. Take advantage and become the cream of the league. None of Conference strength or anything matters if we finish at or near the top. Do our jobs, the rest will fall into place. Stay undefeated as long as possible.

There are two additional Big East games on Monday.

2:30 PM - Xavier vs Auburn, Maui Invitational - ESPN2
7;30 PM - Creighton vs. Boise St., from Grand Cayman Island - Facebook.com/StadiumCollegeBasketball

Very down year for conference is what many of us feared given the very few chances for nationally-relevant wins. Now Villanova isn't even ranked. That said, as long as we handle our business we will be ok. We can now likely say that we are a legitimate Big East title contender. If we win this mini tournament it will really help us with our resume especially seeing how insane Duke is. For so many years people thought it was silly that we are a legit Big East title contender but if there ever was a year it's really possible, it's this one. Don't want to get ahead of myself, but maybe Keita going down ignited a new chemistry and energy leading to Figgy's coming out party. Lack of size will kill us eventually, but if our guards keep playing like this, we will be hard to beat.

I'm as big a cheerleader for this conference as anyone, but we lost way too much in terms of talent in 1 year. We may see 2-3 bids in a rebuilding year. We need to step up in a big way.
