Around the Big East 18/19

Marquette/Presbyterian (located in Clinton, SC) are tied at the half at 26. I just tuned in, but quickly realized it was halftime.

5:00 PM - Furman at Villanova - FS2

So Furman is 4 and 0 and has already beaten last year's final four cinderella Loyola-Chicago. If they somehow beat Villanova (not very likely they are 16 point underdogs) they will have beaten two of last year's final four teams.

You probably could have gotten a million to one odds on Furman beating two of last year's final four teams within their first five games of this season.

I'll say GZ. Furman is a tiny liberal arts school with about 2,700 students a couple of hours south of me and unlike its slightly northern neighbor Davidson not particularly known for basketball.

Providence is looking great in the second half against South Carolina. Admittedly, this is not the Gamecocks squad of two years ago, but the Big East needs to start compiling high major wins in the nonconference, so it's still important.

Haven't made the big dance since 1980, so if they are for real it's going to be a wild scene after the conference finals if they win it all.

Thanks for that info on Furman.

FYI they hold one signicant claim to D1 basketball history. Furman's Frank Selvy owns the single game NCAA D1 scoring record of 100 points! A record that I dare say will be tough to break.

Thanks Ghostzapper for the Frank Selvy reminder. Over the summer I read a great basketball book by Pat Conroy (Great Santini, Prince of Tides, Lords of Discipline) called My Losing Season which was a wonderful account of his senior year as point guard at The Citadel; one of their league opponents was Furman and he did mention the Frank Selvy connection.

Nova up by 5 at half 36-31.

They are nowhere near last years level. Maybe Wright will get them going.

I think many of the pundits, given Nova's recent incredible success, have given Jay Wright a little too much credit (as did I). He's a great coach, but not a miracle worker and they lost an awful lot. Having said that, I fully expect them to be a top 20 team all year and to contend for the BE title. But, it really does appear wide open in BE this year.

Nova looks awful... they are going to struggle with us big time:m. The entire team looks slow and confused. Not the Nova of years past.

I don't want to count my chickens before they are hatched. But it kind of reminds me of 98-99 and 99-00, where UConn just seemed too good for us the first year but looked slower the following one.

When posters were making conference predictions, I wanted to post one where Nova finished third, but didn't have the balls. I was going to put Butler first, but got scared off by sports sites picking them middle of the pack.

Me neither, but far as I’ve seen thus far, best three teams in big east are SJU, Providence and Marquette.. just far as I’ve seen in an early season. I can’t see Nova going places this year. Just not seeing the same talent nor chemistry.

Wow......4 minutes remaining and Nova is on the ropes. Not good for the conference if they don't pull this one out.

Not so shocking (although I am shocked since it's against Furman) when you consider this team was gutted after last season. The loss of talent and experience was obviously crippling. (I'm concerned the same will happen to us next year when a number of our core guys may no longer be around.)

Eric Paschall is a fine complementary player, but I thought pundits way overrated him this season. Having seen him in high school, Fordham & Nova, I believe he is a solid undersized power player, but not capable of putting this team on his shoulders & leading them to great heights. I just don’t think he is in the class of the former key Nova guys now in NBA.

Secondly, Gillespie is not Arcidiacono, as you could see when Michigan abused him by posting him up often. Jay Wright will get the best out of these guys, but obviously you can’t have a vintage team annually. He also has one of top recruiting classes for next year, so consider this a bit of a “successful transition year” imo.

Maybe I will be wrong, but I see a lot of parity in the BE & teams reloading. I believe this could be a season with 3 or 4 teams dancing.

Watching this Nova game two things are certain..........Nova is not a top 20 team. The other is that St. John's is the most talented team in the conference even without Keita.
