Around the Big East 18/19

Yes Morrow and John are big and physical and prevent PC from bullying them underneath like the Friars twice did to us.
That is going to be a worry with the DePaul & Xavier games.
The staff better quickly learn how to implement a competent zone defense or two. They should also put pressure on the ball via full court, half court and utilizing traps.

G-Town down 15 with 15:36, if they lose and we beat SHU, we'll be in sole possession of 3rd.
Only thing with us is, we could win by 15 or lose by 15.
Just hope we're on tonight.

Speaking of traps, one of my fondest St John's memories is watching Looie cross his arms into an "X", his signal for what he called "the bush" (a 1-3-1 half court trap).

He didn't use it often but it was unexpected and, usually, quite effective

I think Marquette could be a sneaky Final Four pick that leads you to pool victory because most of the country won't think to put them there. The scary thing is that we are one of the few teams they would be wary of facing.

With this win, I think we basically clinched a top 6 finish at worst. Finally we'll get to start BET play on Thursday!

Xavier essentially controls their own destiny for the 3 spot after being in last place a little while ago.

This is awesome and shows that nobody (aside from maybe Duke) can draw there like we do. Even UConn vs Nova and UConn vs Cuse couldn't crack the list!

So many teams played neutral site games there this year, including UConn, Syracuse, Maryland, Kentucky, Florida, Maryland, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Iowa, Oregon and West Virginia.

I'll let Duke slide since they're Duke and 500 miles away, but nice to know that schools like UConn and Syracuse can't come close to our attendance figures. :)

So on a year when we are not outstanding or a top 25 team we drew fabulously at the Garden. I hope this puts to rest any discussion about playing all games at CA. Seems to me we could have played a game or two more at MSG this season.
Thanks to everyone who showed up and was included in those numbers.

I honestly think a big part of this has been the tremendous amount of press we've received locally, even though we haven't been ranked. Have to think Cragg has been behind that.

Have to also think that Cragg is a much more creative leader with regard to filling empty seats. As we know the school bought and dumped a lot of cheap tix on the secondary market. Imagine there were probably a lot of charitable giveaways as well. Nothing wrong with any of that by the way, if they can afford it.

Can somebody explain buying/dumping tickets on the secondary market? Would St. John's lose money through that? Are there any downsides? It's very clear at least that people are showing up and the announced figures appear accurate. Nova for example was definitely a sell out.

Personally, I always buy through Stubhub (just out of habit). The more options the better IMO. The cheapest priced tickets for the Nova game were around $45, so clearly still a lot of demand regardless of supply.

Watching Xavier vs Nova. I've found it extremely annoying all year how Boothe on every 3 point attempt flails out his arms and legs in attempt to draw a foul. Well, they just called him for an offensive foul on a 3 point shot, he ended up kicking the defender and knocking him down. Never seen that! Justice served.

so happy they called him on that.

Even in a down year, X has one of the best home atmospheres in the whole country. This is great. They are one or two reliable shooters and a ball handler away from really being dangerous.

For those of us fortunate to attend in person, seeing a full garden clad mostly red is new to our eyes. The Nova game is played here every year. This year it was an expensive ticket on the secondary market and the enthusiasm displayed that early evening surpassed any home Johnny game I can recall. The people screaming their voices hoarse were Johnny fans - not people pried into going to MSG with cheap tickets.

It looks to me like our local fan base came out this year like no other season.

Wow. Talk about peaking at the right time, i could totally see this Xavier team running through the whole BET and make it to the big dance
