Around the Big East '17-18

Missed this amidst all the celebration yesterday, but I just saw that Georgetown lost a nail biter to Xavier 96-91 in overtime last night at Xavier. Tough conference.

A bit of a devastating loss for Georgetown. Up 4 with 25 seconds left, and they give up a 4 point play. Sound familiar?

Nova torching the Hall, 92-76, turning what was a close game into a double-digit win.
Let’s go Johnnies!

Watched the whole game and what was a close, taut, back and forth type game all of a sudden you look up and Nova is up by 23. Sometimes i don't think Jay Wright and Nova get enough credit for the program they have built there basically outshining the Goliaths of college basket ball for the last 3 years or so.

Georgetown on the brink of an upset. Under 5, and they're up by 8 on Butler.

They're making it tougher for us to move up the Big East standings. We gotta win tomorrow.

Good win by Georgetown.

Yep! Although, it was a "bad win" for us.

Looking at their schedule.... The only loss I can say with confidence is Villanova. They can beat the rest of their remaining opponents. They have 4 remaining games and 3 are at home. That would be quite a feat for the Hoyas.

You have to speed 'em up and make their guards uncomfortable. Butler never played with any sense of urgency until around 7 minutes left in the game. Butler had plenty of opportunities, as Georgetown was giving it to 'em, but they couldn't seize the moment.

Ewing has done a great first year job. No drama on his team. Standings are really irrelevant for us at this point. Still would have to play 4 games in 4 days with 6 guys. January and Marcus Leavet were killers. Just hope they continue to play hard and we keep who hope to keep and get who we're after. The consolation is that from 1 to 10 the Big East was as competitive as I can remember under the new alignment. The pity is we are knocking each other off that will affect the number of teams going to the dance as opposed to the Not Invited Tourney.

I understand the 4 games in 4 days, regardless whether we finish 7th or 10th. But, the 8/9 winner has a disadvantage being they'll play at 7pm, and will have to play at 'noon the following day. I like how the ACC, Big 12, and Pac-12 does it. In those respective conferences, the 8/9 winner would play at the same time the following day, and likewise for the 7/10 winner.

The conference tournament is shaping up to be a good one, based on how things have gone the past couple weeks in the Big East. I agree, in reference to the conference is cannibalising one another, and has actually put Butler in a precarious spot when it comes to the "dance."

The pre-season criticism/ridiculing of Georgetown looks a little misplaced now. They have definitely over-achieved in Ewing's first year and are a likely NIT team at this point. Even if we win 4 of our last 5, we will likely finish no better than 9th. The BE is one tough conference.

While that past two wins are impressive, they're still a long shot for the NIT at this point. Due to playing the weakest out of conference schedule in the nation, their RPI and SOS currently sit at 123 and 114 respectively. Those aren't the type of numbers that will get you into the NIT.

The NIT takes all of the regular season conference members that lose their conference tournaments. That can be a decent number.

Looking at the most recent rankings which have Nova and Xavier at 3 and 4, which is great for the Big East. None of our other teams are ranked despite having the best conference.

Not that it matters too much, but one consequence of having the top rated conference in RPI and only having 10 teams in the league is that they keep beating up on each other. This pretty much has prevented Providence, Seton Hall, Butler and Creighton from getting into the rankings most of the season. Not a complaint, just a thought. If there ever is another expansion, it certainly could help that issue. But the league is so good right now we really don't have bottom feeders. Don't want to mess with that.

Per Goodman
Villanova coach Jay Wright told ESPN that Phil Booth will play tonight against DePaul. "We'll play him some. We're going to keep a close eye on him."

Huge if Booth, great defender, is well enough to displace Gillespie, a poor one

Seton Hall Providence game gets suspended because of floor conditions.

I've never seen that happen before

Seton Hall v. Providence game suspended at 13:03 remaining in 2nd half. SH leading 56-47.

Rodriguez hurt for SH.
