Around the Big East '17-18

,Govan looked good. Good finish (I missed the first half and beginning of the 2nd).

Georgetown is good, they just haven’t learned to finish yet. Baldwin and Martin top talents for Butler, carried The Whole team back from 18point deficit. Georgetown had noe answer on defense,as 90% of their baskets were inside!

What is up with the scoring in this league? Depaul's 85 points were the least of any of the six teams that played last night (well, OK, Gtown and Butler only went for 75 each in regulation, but that's still not too bad). That's not the way it used to be in the Big East.

Personally, I like it.

Per Evan Daniels

Villanova freshman Jermaine Samuels broke his hand & is expected to be out for 6 to 8 weeks, per Jay Wright.

Had 11 points in Nova win over DePaul.

Also good for recruiting. Back in the day, I recall recruits being turned off by the ‘rough/aggressive’ Big East (6 fouls for a short time).

Interesting

Depaul is up by 8 over Xavier ( at Xavier) at halftime.

They got it up to 16 early in the second half, but their outside shooting as cooled. It's now a 2 point game, with 8 and a half to go, and Depaul is collapsing.

Watching Butler play today, it is clear that sharing the rock, taking good shots in rhythm & moving without the ball is a winning formula most nights. To me a solid passing team is a joy to watch.

Closing out a nice win v Nova

Watching the Gtown - Marquette game, it is clear St. John's will be hard pressed to beat most teams in the Big East with our depleted roster. Other than DePaul and Georgetown I don't know where the other wins will come from. The possibility of fewer Big East wins than last season is a distinct possibility if both Lovett and Ponds are not on the roster at full strength. Even if Mullin actually knew how to coach, even on a Patrick Ewing level, without Lovett and a healthy Ponds players like Bashir Ahmed, Justin Simon and Marvin Clark will have to score high double figures every game with strong contributions from Yakwe and Owens within a disciplined team concept. I just don't see that happening. To date we have had trouble against any form of zone defense and defending the perimeter is not in the defense's DNA. The most disturbing aspect of our offense has been the disappearance of our outside shooting. So much for having Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin as shooting coaches!

No question EVERY game in conference will be a struggle and victories will come ONLY to whoever makes less mistakes, plays with ball movement finding the open man, and strong relentless defense for 40 minutes.Every 3 pt shot must be contested. We must not leave our feet on pump fakes. And WE must pump fake in our offense more, draw the defense in . Our big men must cut to the basket more then they have. Only take high percentage 3pt shots as Providence did to us.No gimmes in Big East, every team is a quality team with at least two talented scorers on each squad.

FWIW.....the Butler guard (Baldwin) was just a 3-star recruit. It goes to show you can find diamonds in the rough.

Providence Butler creighton and even seton hall has looked bad a couple times this year. Goes to show you how not to get too down on your team when it doesnt play great every time. But we need a full strength roster back. We will have plenty of wins in the big east this year at full strength.

Of course PC getting smoked by Creighton & Cartwright hobbled & having off day.

Apologies if this was already posted, but pretty impressive to have two Big East teams in top 5! Three Big 12 teams in top ten ..

Providence about to knock off Xavier. Have to give Cooley credit; he does a great job of getting his team ready after a tough loss.
