Lavin recruited circles around Willard. The one great class Willard pulled was because he hired two shady assistants, one of whom already has been in trouble (Antigua, who brought Delgado and Carrington as part of the package) and the other who would have gotten trouble had he stayed longer (Tiny, who brought Whitehead and Desi). If Lavin agreed to Tiny's demands he probably is still coaching at SJU, and Willard is fired.
Since the Whitehead class, the Hall's recruiting has improved; Powell is a player, Cale looks like a player, I thought Walker was a player and he has Thompson coming in next year who will be a very good front court piece. Hall will have a good year because they were able to convince Delgado to stay another year and because Desi has turned out to be the ultimate diamond-in-the rough -- a kid from NY without the hype who turned into a helluva college player very quickly. Going forward, jury is still out, and I think Willard knows that which is why he was close to taking the South Florida job last year.
