Around College Basketball

Making Plays-Why you so quick to call someone you don't know all types of names?  So far you've called him thug, crazy, loose cannon, and I'm pretty sure I'm forgetting a few more.  That's a lot of judgement and hostility towards someone you don't know personal.  Have you never lost your temper before?  Most people have.  You seem to be losing your temper just over talking about this situation lol.

And spoiler alert for you, he won't be fired, he'll be suspended most likely for the remaining regular season games and possibly some post season, and then he'll be coaching next year as I said in my original post.  So, your reasoning is what is actually flawed, because all the things you're saying and the punishment  you are wanting is not going to come true.

I think you are conflating what has been posted.  I don’t remember calling him crazy or a thug.  I said he acted like a thug.

I think you are misunderstanding what I'm saying as well.

I think Howard is absolutely in the wrong and deserves punishment.  Missing the rest of the season and some fines wouldn't be too harsh, IMO.  I just don't think he's all the other things that's been called in this thread.

And I also think Gard deserves some of the blame as well, he knew Howard was ticked off, you don't grab a man walking around from you that's mad, that's asking for trouble.

Anyways that's my last post on the subject.  It's not that serious I don't care about Michigan basketball at all, but was interesting the different takes people have on the subject.

I think Gard accepts no hand shake from Howard, until Howard pulls down his mask walking passed him to say "We'll remember this", that is when Gard tries to explain himself and the Timeout. In hindsight he should have ignored the comment and not gotten up into Howard, clutching a bit. That action then angered Howard more with his "Don't F ing" touch me repeats. I agree with whoever said touching someone else is a provocation. Gard should not have done that.

Result: Howard gets punished severely. Gard gets some reprimand, the assistant for UW must have said or done something pretty provocative to get Howard to slap him, so maybe he gets reprimanded. Any player that got into it gets suspended. It was an ugly mess that would have been prevented with cooler heads all around.

Didn't Looie get really angry with John Thompson once and they had words?

A fight between them would have resembled Jeff Van Grundy grabbing Alonzo Mourning's ankle in the Knicks-Miami brawl.

St. John's own Matt Brust was a quest on last nights WPIX"s sports rap up show Sports Nation. Was asked about Rutgers and the Jawan Howard matter, nothing about his alma mater.

Just stop using the word thug dude.  I mean c'mon.

This behavior may be related to "coaching" he got in college as a member of the Fab Five.  The coach was fired for significant NCAA violations, Webber was convicted in a money laundering case.  The Fab Five were put on a pedestal as they introduced new styles to basketball uniforms.  Got to believe this led to an entitled attitude.  Fisher had success when Michigan fired Frieder at end of regular season and the Fisher led the team on a 6 game run through the Tournament to the 1989 championship in a game that I still think was stolen from Seton Hall.  I just don't see Fisher being any kind of disciplinarian.

Say whatever you want but Howard would have been fine saying “I’ll remember this” and walking  right by Greg Gard. But, it was Gard who grabbed Howard and precipitated the physical contact. Gard should have never have grabbed him. That being said ,Howard still could have walked away but let’s not act like Gard didn’t exacerbate the situation by grabbing him first.

Wisconsin’s Greg Gard will not be suspended and will be fined $10K, source told @Stadium. No suspension or fine expected for assistant Joe Krabbenhoft.

Three players will be suspended for one game: Moussa Diabate and Terrance Williams of Michigan, and Jahcobi Neath of Wisconsin.

You are not credible to lecture about this after your and Monte’s back and forth earlier.

Is no one mentioning that it wasn’t Gard to whom Howard threw the punch toward?

Root cause analysis - No fight occurs if Gard just shakes hands and  keeps walking.... He physically attempted to stop Howard in the line.

Was Howard's reaction unbecoming of a coach and leader of men... potentially. I don't know what that assistant did or said to warrant Howard slapping him (I've seen way too many twitter handles call it a punch...) But i do know Players would Love a coach that would stand up for them like that.

Not even a game suspension for Gard.... crazy- he was the Trigger incident. Won't be surprised to see a "race" angle used when looking at the punishments by some pundits.

Rothstein

Indiana has now lost five straight games and is firmly on the bubble.

Final four regular season games:

Maryland
at Minnesota
Rutgers
at Purdue

Gard did try to shake hands with the sore loser Howard who snubbed him prompting Gard to grab his arm. Reason some think it was a punish is probably because when Howard drew his arm back he made a fist. Was barely a slap more like a mush face like when a hockey player with a gloved hand gives an opponent a facial massage.

Spare me the "Gard grabbed his elbow" takes.  Your position is Howard gets to mouth off to Gard and then run away like a little girl, and it's an OUTRAGE that Gard grabbed his arm to finish the conversation?  Because 6'9" Juwan Howard somehow felt threatened or violated by somebody grabbing his elbow to finish the conversation THAT HE STARTED?  Pul-lease.  That's all just excuse-making by Howard for his bruised ego and hurt feelings at losing the game and he felt (incorrectly) being shown up.

Notably, when Howard then further escalated the situation (and btw instigated a brawl in which it is fortunate nobody seems to have been seriously hurt) he didn't take a swipe at Gard, but instead at an assistant.

Howard was always deadly from the elbow.

If Howard has a PR representative, the advisable thing to do is apologize for losing it in the heat of the moment.   Trying to explain his way out of it will only make things worse.   Take a cue from A-Rod, who never helped himself when he opened his mouth.
