Around College Basketball

Look it is twofold.  He is a legend up there and his overall record speaks for itself.

But some of those stats are misleading.  The program has clearly flatlined over the last 6-7 years.  They are no longer a perennial top 25 program, no longer get high seeds in NCAA's.  He has gotten hot and gone on some runs after some very mediocre regular seasons and backdoor NCAA bids.  I get it but it is clear the program is no longer on the level it once was.

I don't like Boeheim or Syracuse but he's taken them to the Tournament the past 3 consecutive years and nearly every year for several decades. He's taken them to the Sweet 16 7 times since 2009, including 2/3 of the most recent Tournaments. Also since 2012 he's taken them to the Elite 8 3 times and the Final 4 twice.

If a St. John's coach achieved even 25% of what Boeheim has achieved at Syracuse they'd be given a lifetime contract. He deserves a couple more years at a minimum before anyone forces him out.

I don't disagree that he's gotten lucky with some of his Tournament runs these past 5-10 years, but he still achieved them and that's what matters most for fans and will be remembered for decades to come. Tournaments are much more important than regular seasons and he's had more Tournament success these past 5+ years than probably 90% of Power programs (including all Big East programs outside of Nova). His recruiting has definitely fallen off and that could be an issue going forward, but his seat shouldn't warm until next spring at the earliest. Not only due to his history, but also his recent history (including last year's Sweet 16).

I guess I can see sacrificing basketball at Pitt, Syracuse, and BC for a money grab if their football programs were truly capable of something, but none of them will ever sniff a national championship. Was it really worth it?

a nice tournament run after a mediocre regular season is the equivalent of saying CMA's teams come together in February and March and something most of us were fantasizing about as recently as last Wednesday at 6:29 P.M.!

No teams ever hang banners for how many weeks they were ranked in the AP Top 25, but they do hang banners for Tournament runs.

Consistently making Sweet 16 runs (or better)... something he has done in 2/3 of the most recent seasons (and the only ACC team to do so last year), has nothing in common with missing out on the Tournament for 3 straight years. Day and night. Had CMA actually consistently (or even once) made the Tournament during his late season runs then yes there'd be some similarities. That'd also be a totally different outcome in a results oriented business and fans would act accordingly.

I think we're agreeing.  I would sign up for Boeheim's more recent seasons in a heartbeat.  I used "fantasizing" in my earlier post bc many had visions of a newly energized SJU beating Creighton, DePaul, one out of two v. Marquette/Xavier, perhaps a dream run to at least the BET semis or finals, and then who knows?  Sweet 16 here we come.  Instead, five days later the talk is of Posh potentially transferring.

Is it time to talk about Phil Martelli being a better coach than Juwan Howard?

All things being equal, I’d be shocked if he wasn’t. And that makes sense when you look at resumes and accomplishments.

LOL there's no question about it, tongue was planted firmly in cheek.  But there's also no question that you need more than coaching ability to succeed at the high D1 level.

Really what this points to (assuming it isn't a mirage or a team on a mission from God, both of which are possible) is that Juwan may have been exerting more control over the game coaching than he should have been given the experience gap between him and Martelli.

Given Juwan's personality, that would not be at all surprising - and it also doesn't bode well for his long-term success unless he grows as either a coach or a person or both.  Possible, but tough to do while competing at the level Michigan expects.  Will be interesting to watch what happens when he returns, and also how next season plays out.

Big win for Rutgers tonight at Indiana. Credit to Pikell for keeping majority of his team like Ron Harper, Geo Baker and others around for what seems like 10 years in this time of huge roster turnover.
