Who were the people saying Pitino wouldn't win big at Iona ? :)

Pitino says he wants to make Iona the Gonzaga of the East Coast.

He's turning 70 next year. He's kind of running out of time...
70 is the new 50 at least I hope so though it is not trending that way for me as I approach. /media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png/media/kunena/emoticons/smile.png
I’m hoping 60 is the new 40 but would be happy for the new 50.
50 isnt much fun Monte at 60ish has more energy than me :)

Pitino is without a doubt one of the best coaches in college history.   Upgrading Iona is really not a surprise, but to put it into perspective, this is only the FIFTH Iona victory over a top 25 opponent in their entire history.

No one should really be surprised that he could improve Iona, but it doesn't negate the fact that very few schools would hire Pitino after all self inflicted dirt was exposed about him.    He is likely going to repair his reputation by building Iona into a very good team, but even so, we made a better hire with CMA.

Good for Iona, good for NY basketball.   They aren't a threat to us.

Pitino and St. John' sounds like a match made in double secret probation heaven where every self-satisfied "look over there" basketball head at a "favored" P5 program is relieved at the distraction to be found in endless allegations against STJ.
p.s. I still haven't forgiven him for the Celtics not playing defense for the time he was their coach and the disrespect he showed to Auerbach.

I try not to relate Pitino hire to SJU since it is a moot point. As noted above, he is a great hire at Iona. As much as I respect Tim Cluess’ achievements at Iona, he never won a Dance game, although he appeared there often to his credit. I suspect if Rick sticks around he will achieve that, a rarity with MAAC programs. I think Gonzaga of the East is a bit much, but all part of the Pitino marketing expertise. He is an excellent recruiter who I suspect will also play transfer game quite well.

Changing subjects, I was positive about Bobby Hurley and welcomed possibility of him taking HC spot here. Having seen him leverage a better contract with ASU while promoting a false flirtation with SJU, I now think less of him and certainly prefer CMA. Interesting to note that Bobby seems to be struggling at ASU, although he certainly got a healthy contract there. He may be house hunting near Storrs in next few years as an AC if negative trend at ASU continues.:)  Interesting how things sometimes don’t work out the way we assume.

As long as they don't start filling MSG more than we can
The Gotham Classic(I'll be there) at MSG on the 18th will give us somewhat of a gage as to local fan interest in Iona. No doubt they got national recognition with the win over Bama.

Hmm. Seems like the only people who profess that 70 is the new 50 are people in their 70s -- of which I'm one.

Dayton upset Kansas with buzzer shot.

Dayton fan support at neutral site was impressive as usual. Always felt they would be great BE addition.

Dayton over Kansas  74-73.  At the buzzer. Wow

I just hope Kansas plays another game before they play us otherwise they’ll be coming in very angry and Self will have them all juiced up and I have a feeling it could get ugly!!!

I was thinking the same thing. Don't want to play them coming off this loss. We better be ready.

I hope they play another game Delaware, if not, this is the worst thing that could have happened. I think they play Sunday.

UMass Lowell, Lipscomb, and Austin Peay all beat Dayton this year. The team that’s supposed to anchor our SOS just took a big hit to their own resume.

But on the other hand I’ll look at this ooc slate as a failure if we don’t get a win vs KU. So them potentially being a top 10-15 team that we have a better chance of beating rather than a top 5 team, might be better overall. Bottom line, beating Kansas is always gonna be impressive and their loss to Dayton won’t change that.

Early on and Well before Dayton took the lead in that of that game I felt that SJ could play with Kansas. Across most sports I gauge whether a team has a chance based on whether they will be physically overwhelmed by the opposition.

The Baltimore Ravens were a physical mismatch for the Giants and I therefore thought that we had zero chance. The Patriots did not represent a physical mismatch and so I thought we had a punchers chance.

I don’t see Kansas physically overwhelming us. If we play well, we can and will win

Iona loses to Belmont by 7. Maybe hold off on the Pitino statue in front of campus.
You’d think that with Slick Rick’s knowledge of hoops and horses that this would’ve been a guaranteed W.
