Around College Basketball

He enrolled in Michigan in 2020 so by my count it is his 5th season, his COVID year.

Is that 20 mill figure for all sports?
A collaboration between Congress and the NCAA is the stuff of nightmares for most of America .
Can you imagine what will come out of this when 2 groups like this agree on something .

Assuredly , nothing good for Tax Payers . Is there ever ?

This payment by the NCAA wouldn’t come in a vacuum. The power conferences would correspondingly commit to a revenue share structure for the same period that’s expected to be in the neighborhood of $20 million per school, per year, determined via a formula based on revenue.

It’s a permissive structure, that schools can choose to take part in. The NCAA potentially agreeing to make what are essentially significant back payments in the case and the power conferences potentially agreeing to a revenue share structure going forward is, some consider....a deal that could hatch relative peace on the landscape for the near future. There remain myriad details to work out and potential complications.

“I think without a doubt, there’s a framework of a settlement,” said an industry source briefed on the matter. “The question is what’s inside the framework. That’s where the debate is occurring right now.” w/@DanMurphyESPN.

Hopefully we idiots who continue to follow and support this crap find other forms of entertainment and college sports disintegrate before that happens.

This is coming unless a modicum of sanity is applied.

Wait until the college football playoffs when a very good player from a team that did not qualify transfers after the semester and joins the other school for its playoff games.
If it goes the route of "employee", could the schools then have non-compete clauses?

Don’t blame the players for this dysfunctional state in college athletics.

Blame the feckless NCAA for its lack of leadership over the decades by refusing to acknowledge the disparity and its refusal to share a portion of its revenue with the players.

Years ago there was a posted article on this site which detailed the “old boy network” in the NCAA administration which, according to the article, provided a cushy landing to failed Coaches and athletic administrators while (for many prior years) an injured athlete had his/ her athletic scholarship pulled, or a player who had played 4 years for the school but short on credits to graduate was required to pay out of pocket for additional needed classes.

The blame for this broken system rests squarely with the NCAA who was suppose to be the adults in the equation.

NCAA could have put their arms around this decades ago. They had to see the writing on the wall with the Ed O'Bannon case but...chose to do...nothing. Just all about TV contracts, revenue, Super Conferences...but a bunch of Jethros and Bubbas were too short sighted.

Personally, I boycotted the NCAAs this year, protest against the St Johns snub...honestly...didn't miss it.

Non-compete clauses are different state by state and I believe FTC just banned non-competes federally, although that will be challenged in courts. Either way, don't believe non-competes would be applicable here

This is annoying. Not singling you out Otis, just a general statement. We can be of the opinion the system is in shambles and the product unsustainable, without it being a criticism of the players.

The players are playing by the “rules” and pushing the envelope because no one has an idea or courage to change it.

The same rules the NCAA put in place, which was beyond heavy handed, by punishing a kid for taking $20 to go out for pizza with friends.

Yes this is the NCAA’s fault. But college basketball is in a horrible position, and schools like SJU are the ones who will suffer the most.
