Around College Basketball

Not too shocked because when I was looking at someone's poll the other day (maybe Fanta), I was thinking they might not even be that high.

I guess we'll see soon enough if they are extra dangerous when being "overlooked," but I didn't recall their recruiting to be anything extraordinary this past offseason. I actually may have stayed in school if I were Timme. More money to be made there for him.

Zags think Big 12 is better than Big East for $$.

Even if they state it as primary reason against, due to extra time for students or extra cost (which would be more than offset with bigger conf rev and increased merch, donations etc) they can't be caught up too much on travel east if they'll go to UCF, Cincinnati, West Virginia.

not necessaril; it is possible that the B12 could break its non revenue sports into geographic divisions which would not require the Gonzaga women’s golf, cross country, volleyball, soccer, tennis teams and it’s men’s baseball, track, tennis, golf, and cross country teams to travel to UCF, Cincy, and West Virginia.

Also even in the current format, since the Big 12 has 17 teams (with Gonzaga), that means Gonzaga can play the Eastern teams only 1X per year in basketball and teams like BYU, Utah, Arizona, Arizona St, Colorado, etc. 2X per year.

No doubt about it, the Big 12 will make a play for MSG, UConn, Villanova, and probably St. John's and Georgetown. The Big East needs a strong season to solidify our next TV contract and prevent teams from leaving.

Also a dark horse but why not Creighton? Geographic fit, huge $ and good TV ratings

Yep was going to say Creighton as a possibility after St. John's and Georgetown, but the Big 12 is already stacked in the Midwest and wants to head East, so their priority I'd bet will be UConn, Villanova, St. John's, and Georgetown. If they want Midwestern teams then I could see Creighton, Marquette and Xavier being of interest. So basically the majority of the conference lol, but I think St. John's would be top 2 or 3 due to MSG / NYC.

I hope the Big East stays together, but schools like Seton Hall, Providence, Butler and DePaul have to be nervous about realignment and NIL.

Then we may see a creation of a “Big East 12” or “Big 12 East” basketball only schools conference added to the Big 12.

Texas is still 2,000 miles away from Spokane. Arizona is over a 1,000 miles. It’s not easy for them regardless.

Creighton would be a perfect match for the Big 12 if they added non-football schools. I agree with you on the big four teams they’d want first.

If we don’t add we will be poached. It’s just a matter of when.

Maybe, and I realize money will win out, but being in a conference with 24 teams or whatever when we haven't even won the 11 team Big East in decades sounds miserable. I think eventually we'll see the top teams from these conferences leave to form smaller conferences (at higher payouts per team). Maybe even more regional if interest in matchups like Rutgers vs UCLA don't draw the eyeballs that networks expect. Wouldn't that be ironic.

We being the BE or we being St. John’s?

I think we’re 4th maybe, 3rd at best right now in terms of who other conferences may be interested in.

Give it a few years and it's possible we could move up to first or second. From what I've read the Big 12 would've taken UConn for basketball-only (at a basketball-only rate) but UConn wasn't interested as their goal is to get paid with football money. If UConn is holding out for a full invite then they're arguably less desirable than some basketball-only schools given how terrible their football TV ratings are.

Villanova is still unproven with Neptune. St. John's has the NYC- and more importantly MSG- connection. A goal for any conference interested in Big East teams would be MSG for their tournament and some regular season games. With Pitino here we should be able to make it an actual home court for all games with many sellouts.

Ultimately though it's highly unlikely any conference would take just one Big East team (unless it's UConn and they want their football), so being top 3-4 should be good enough. Again, don't want the Big East to split, but it's imperative that we remain associated with teams like Villanova and Georgetown. Back in 2011 we applied for ACC membership with Georgetown and Villanova. We could see something like that happen again.

We applied for ACC membership?

We applied for ACC membership?

Yes, in 2011 or 2012. I'm not sure if it was an official application or SJU/Nova/GTown just inquired.

I believe it was the NY Daily News that reported it, and their news articles from that time have been taken down. Crazy how that happens... was only a decade ago. An example from Twitter though with a (dead) NYDN link:

Also prior to that Nova applied for full membership, but later applied for basketball-only (along with SJU/GTown):

Both. St. John’s is a sleeping giant. The tv ratings don’t lie. Indiana-St. John’s was one of the most watched games in the entire Big Ten season. And that was a bad St. John’s team.

St. John’s hasn’t been good in 20 years and somehow we have some of the most viewed games in the country year after year. The Xavier-St. John’s game in 2020 was the most watched game in the network’s history to that point.

The Big East is the biggest anomaly in college sports. Huge school names, rich traditions, massive markets, and no football.

How can you be ineligible at West Virginia and transfer to Arizona St??? This is also his 6th year in college, not sure this is possible!!!
Redshirt year and covid year-plenty of kids in 6th year especially in football.
