“Yormark’s efforts align with his oft-stated argument that college basketball is undervalued in the marketplace. A year ago, the Big 12 extended its rights agreements with Fox and ESPN through the spring of 2031. Sources said it is Yormark’s hope that when that deal expires, the Big 12 will be able to break out men’s basketball as a package that is separate from football in the next rights agreement. The Big 12 trails the Big Ten and SEC in the race for football supremacy, but it has established itself in recent years as arguably the best men’s basketball conference in the country. Adding Gonzaga would likely enhance the value of a potential basketball-only media negotiation.”

It will be very interesting to see the $ and how long the Big East TV contract is. The Big 12 will likely use that as a benchmark to clear, and if the years line up, they can see it as the time to poach the Big East to sweeten the pot.

Weird because the stories this past Summer were that the B12 Presidents did not want a school with little to no value in football which everyone read as a clear indication UCONN was a no.

Now they plan on inviting a school with NO football whatsoever. I guess if they take less $$$ it works out.

Honestly it makes sense for both parties. I'd rather Gonzaga come to the Big East but appears there are holdups from both Gonzaga and the Big East on that happening. Big 12 makes a lot more sense for them especially now that the Big 12 is already in Pac 12 territory. They'd also get their rival BYU back.

Glad UConn is having such a miserable football season, otherwise that nonsense may have started up again. I still would bet the Big 12 will make a move for Big East schools in the future, and this is one step towards that. Just hope it isn't anytime soon because this should be a special year for St. John's and the Big East.

If the Big East contract expires in the 2030-2032 range, I’d presume that’s when it’ll begin. Right around the same time getting out of the ACC becomes more affordable for the mid tier schools.

Ironically, we’ll probably end up doing a round robin with our old rivals regardless (UConn, Villanova, Georgetown, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, West Virginia), and then cycle through other regions of the conference.

Pitino really was a program saver

Val and the rest of those morons better be on the phones today.

What sense does Gonzaga to the Big 12 make over the Big East? Texas and NY are almost the same distance. Arizona is 1,300 miles away. UCF is further than any Big East school. West Virginia, Cincy, Iowa State?

This is like watching a car crash is slow motion.

BYU is a football school. The Big 12 is giving them $31.5 million annually going up to $40 million in a few years. These numbers are 10X the current BE contract and probably will be 3-4X the next BE contact. Val can't do anything about football being worth 4X more than basketball.

Meant Gonzaga😂

You can be certain that if Gonzaga goes to the B12 it will not get an equal share as the football schools, much like the in the old Big East, the basketball only schools like StJ’s did not receive the same media payout as the football/ basketball schools.

That makes a lot more sense lol. I'm with you that I hope the Big East makes an offer, but I also think the Big 12 makes more sense.

I believe at best the Big East could only match what the Big 12 would offer in terms of money (maybe $10 million?), and Big 12 travel would still be significantly better.

You make a good point that they'd still be on a bit of an island, but they'd have BYU, Utah, Colorado, the Arizona schools, Iowa St, the Kansas schools... all of which are closer than any Big East school (outside of Creighton in some cases).

That's 8 schools, and because the Big 12 has more teams they don't have a round robin and therefore they wouldn't play UCF or other far away teams 2X per year. Factor in all of the non-basketball sports and they'd save a ton on travel.

Make them an offer, but if I'm Gonzaga I'm choosing the Big 12.

In this case, no football is definitely better than UConn football.

Read on Holy Land of Hoops site that Gonzaga only offered two million $. If true, they ought to stay in WCC.
