Around College Basketball

All of the realignment news this summer has been GREAT for the Big East. UConn was passed over by the only two Power conferences which had any interest, even coming off a national basketball championship and a "good" football season. Further, the biggest threat to our league would be a primarily Eastern conference with a strong basketball presence, because they could potentially outbid us for MSG. That conference isn't happening.

I mentioned a few months ago that the ACC would go after teams like SMU and USF once their top teams are raided. Well, they've jumped on that early by adding 3 teams that would turn MSG into a ghost town. Once FSU (and Miami?) leave they'll add USF, another team that MSG would have zero interest in. They may still add UConn, but clearly the ACC's priority is a nationwide football conference and at best they'll become the AAC+.

If I were a billionaire I would pay OSU and WSU big bucks to play each other 12 times a year in football until we got this sorted out. Also give every kid a huge NIL deal as a big middle finger to the Big 10 and Big 12.

Keeping the pac 12 name alive makes sense but how much do mountain west schools get in their tv deal ? Isn’t the pad 12 deal up ? I’d have to believe even if they do this the new pad 12 desk would be seriously devalued. Wasn’t the last offer Apple TV or something ? I guess maybe get a deal with paramount so we don’t have to see marathons of bar rescue all day and early evening on the weekends
The PAC-12 TV deal is up, but they still have NCAA tournament units owed to the conference which is paid out incrementally over six years. Each unit was worth roughly 2 million this past tournament and the PAC-12 earned 7 units each of the past two seasons and 21 units in 2021. They will also get units from the upcoming tournament. It could be a 50 mill windfall split between the two surviving schools plus whatever the other sports pay, if anything.

The Mountain West also has 8 credits from this tournament as a 4-bid conference with San Diego State going to the tournament game.

I cannot believe the lack of foresight the leaders of FSU and Clemson had AFTER witnessing the first waves of conference realignment. Just pure incompetence almost on par with the PAC-12 leadership. It's mind-boggling how any of the top ACC schools thought it was prudent to grant their right to such a lengthy TV deal.

The three new ACC additions were made to ensure the conference's survival after the inevitable losses to the top programs. Great job by the conference leadership. The leverage the ACC had over SMU does not bode well for teams like UConn going forward. Uconn football makes SMU look like Alabama, so any football invite to Uconn will likely come with a decade of no profit-sharing.

I wish the Big East leaders would play chess instead of checkers and grab Gonzaga before they are used to directly hurt us like BYU was used as the tip of the spear against the PAC-12. They were complaining about cultural fit and now they are done. You don't second guess blue blood programs. You make it work.

Gonzaga is not interested as has been reported.
Where has that been reported? I've seen one article that stated "Gonzaga went radio-silent on the Big East." The same article also states "it doesn't sound like an outright invitation will come to fruition, and it's purely because of geography." Few has some really positive quotes over the last 8-10 years about the prospect of Gonzaga joining the Big East. Few in 2018: "I actually think the Big East is positioned, if they want, to expand. If they want to expand nationally, I think that would be really, really crafty, and they could be a national basketball only conference." The telling me part is "if they want." How has the conference not expressed a clear intent to add Gonzaga?! It's baffling.

The current conference leadership is wholly inadequate for the realignment era. There should be a public offer on the table at the very least.

The Big East can add Gonzaga in 2024 and change absolutely nothing, keeping the round-robin basketball schedule intact. They can also have a second tier to that plan adding St. Mary's with conditions, Wichita State, and/or Dayton to go to 2 divisions. ACC has given the Big East the blueprint with SMU. We have all the leverage now with schools like St. Mary's, VCU, Dayton, St. Louis, etc. We can add schools conditionally, withhold profit-sharing, make it easy to drop schools under certain scenarios (ACC merger, poor performance, lack of investment, etc.).

There have been one or two others. I took the article to infer it was Gonzaga that had the problems with the logistics.

A(tlantic)CC is changing its name because of the additions--it is now the All Coast Conference since it covers Atlantic, Gulf Coast (SMU in Texas) and Pacific. Thanks to Chuck Todd this morning on Meet The Press. ;) ;)

KU men’s basketball guard Arterio Morris suspended from program after rape allegation

Damn shame, if this proves to be true. This abuse of women by athletes and those in power has to stop. Last week, the Coach at Michigan St admitted to masturbating while talking to a woman on the phone whom he had met when she was asked to speak with athletes regarding the abuse of women. He claims it was consensual, LMAO. This woman had been raped while she was in college, smfh. He also had the nerve to ask her if she would date him if he wasn't married, You Can't Make This Shit Up. He is supposed to b a Role Model to the young men on his team, GTFOH.

As the grandfather of a 16 year old young lady, who will be a freshman in college next September, I am definitely worried about the environment she will be entering.

Some things are just unacceptable!!!

Amen!
Btw this allegation comes a day after Morris entered a plea deal to end a separate misdemeanor assault case against him.

I did something for the first time ever today: While flipping through channels, I stopped on an Oregon State game.

Offense needs a little work but they actually really get after it on D.

Shame that the football program -- along with basketball and the rest of their athletic department -- will be in limbo for the foreseeable future.

I think that the school needs to have a 4 team tournament like the Lapchick was back in the day. 2 locals and one good out of state school. Have it at Barclays. I know we are creating a new program but always good to have ties to the program history. Call it the Redmen classic.
