Around College Basketball

Pitino is also quoted:
โ€œWhy are we making all the other sports suffer?โ€ said St. Johnโ€™s coach Rick Pitino. โ€œThe minor sports will travel commercially and 50-60 percent of flights are delayed, so kids are going to get stuck in airports, hanging around looking for bad food. Not only is it inconvenient, but we talk all the time about the mental health of people. This is not healthy for anybody.โ€

I really don't see how -- between the TV contracts, conference agreements, revenue generated from basketball, etc. -- how feasible it would ever be for basketball to separate from football. I think our best chance at geographic realignment is for enough consolidation that it becomes geographically convenient once again.

Big W for the Big East retaining UConn, the Big 12 is clearly waiting to see what will happen with the ACC now. The ACC 2024 deadline also expired yesterday, so FSU and everyone else will remain there at least another year. UConn is not going anywhere anytime soon.

Now it's time for the Big East to try adding Gonzaga, who may be waiting to see what happens with the Pac 4. Regardless of whether we can add Gonzaga or not, we'll be in a position of strength negotiating our next TV deal.

There will undoubtedly be a clause in there for if UConn/others leave (like all TV contracts), but regardless it's always better negotiating with a stronger product to increase demand. We all just saw what happened when a deflated Pac 12 (without UCLA/USC) tried securing a deal.

With Pitino and Cooley at Gtown the big east could have a classic type season bringing back old rivalries that get big ratings. Could be perfect timing with the tv deal coming up

Absolutely, plus Nova should rebound which would be really important for the conference. We could be in a situation where 4/4 of our top brands (UConn/Nova/Georgetown/SJU) have successful seasons, while last year only 1/4 had a good season and they almost left.
