Around College Basketball

I think I read that adding new teams cancels the current grant of rights. If true, they need to consider whether bye bye to Clemson and FSU is worth it.

If also true, you take Cal and Stanford in a damn heartbeat.

If it doesn't go through, I honestly offer the Pac-4 orphans a spot with the understanding that they may leave. Two of them are too valuable a brand to be left twisting in the wind.

Not sure how they view the Big East as a whole with regard to academics, but I know of donors who want no part of Big 12.

Not sure where you read that LJSA that the ACC expanding cancels the GOR but I can assure you that is not the case. The Grant of Rights does not get altered if ACC expands.

Again if that were the case there is NO way the ACC Commissioner would even be considering expanding and think about it that would literally be the first thing everyone would talk about as soon as they talked about adding a new school, "Oh I guess this means Clemson, FSU, Miami, UNC can all leave now without forfeiting their media rights for the next 13 years...."

Other than Stanford, that group would water down our basketball. If only there was private Catholic university out west that didn’t have football and had a top ten basketball program.

This was Plan A-2. My main plan is Stanford, Cal, Gonzaga, and St. Mary's so I can see us play at least once a year, but not sure I can get Val to bite on that either.

Too big IMO. Stanford and Gonzaga would be enough without diluting.

Stanford has the money to go Independent in football, Parish and Norlander were talking about this the other day. But I’m sure they would rather a place for their football considering the money their counterparts are set to bring in.

Without saying too much, I am privy to certain documents and I can tell you they have enough to go independent and also pay for Gonzaga to field a football team and let them go independent as well. 😁

If UConn somehow left immediately, what would board opinion be on bringing in Gonzaga and St. Mary's and moving Xavier to the east division? I would do that in a heartbeat.

I have no problem with Gonzaga alone whether or not UConn stays or go. If UConn leaves and St. Mary’s was required to come to seal the deal for Gonzaga to come, so be it. Would like to have a bigger buyout than what was negotiated for UCONN.to seal the

St. Mary’s only averages 2,700 fans a game and they have a very small enrollment and arena. They would need to pledge significant investments as a condition of any invite.

They are a very solid program and they are in a top 10 market. That would give us 4 of the top 10 biggest markets and Gonzaga would give us a presence in #12 Seattle-Tacoma (Spokane itself is 67). It would also give the conference more late night games, and I’m sure the networks would love that.

SMU?? Yikes for the ACC. Double yikes for UConn football.

If these moves happen, that would be would be 2-3 more reasons why the BET at MSG won't be at risk. The ACC is not going to focus on basketball once the major brands leave, they'll add teams like USF.

Cal and Stanford would be in line with the ACC's academic reputation.

That was Donna Shalala’s explanation of why the U left the Big East when she was President there and BC’s justification also.

I do think the ACC should plan as if Clemson/Florida State are already out the door (with Miami shortly behind). How do you placate the other schools? Reports on twitter are that ND is pushing for this.

If any ACC member is leaving in time to play elsewhere in 2024, the ACC bylaws require the member to declare its departure by August 15th. I think it's highly unlikely FSU or anyone else will leave by then.

Fortunately this mess should die down in under a week. I expect it'll pick up again some during the season, especially if UConn does another totally unnecessary/embarrassing public campaign for an invite, but things should mostly quiet down until next summer.

It seems foolish for the ACC to listen to Notre Dame. They will be a Big Ten member at some point. It’s absolutely inevitable.

SMU has potential as a program but would need to invest heavily so the no revenue for 5-7 years makes sense. ACC has all the leverage over them.
You are right. Notre Dame Is totally going to pull an Irish Exit at some point.
