Around College Basketball

That’s exactly what I’m thinking too. Who the hell wants UCF? It’s an irrelevant program even here in Florida. It also makes no sense geographically. There are is no rivalry potential.
Man you guys are really missing the point about what all this expansion is about... It sure ain't about competition... Its about TV markets and expanding geographical reach.

That’s exactly what it’s about. That’s why The Big East adding schools like Witchita St. and St. Louis would not be bad. The Greater Wichita Region contains a population of over 790,000 and is expected to grow to over 870,000 by 2035. St. Louis metro area has a population of 2.8 million. That’s 3.6 million homes that the Big East can reach. That’s what TV contracts are all about. The greater Dayton population is 814,000. That’s what’s matters.

This calculus is changing with cord cutting (and thus TV subs). I do think it doesn’t hurt, but think the Big East should focus on building the best brand they can as basketball-first. That’s why I’m pro-Dayton. St. Louis is an interesting investment.

But, Orlando IS important for the Big 12 so they can have more of a presence in the state for football recruiting.

End of the road for UConn and Gonzaga

ESPN revealed on Friday that the Big 12 is only considering expanding to 14 teams. This came after the conference's athletic directors had a meeting with Commissioner Brett Yormark on Friday, following the announcement of Colorado's realignment

This effectively ends the bid of UConn and Gonzaga to join the Big 12. The two universities were previously considered due to their basketball prowess. Brett Yormark holds the ambition of building Big 12 basketball appeal and sees the two as good options.

However, with the latest development concerning Arizona, it's safe to say this is the end of the road for the two college basketball powerhouses.

Florida isn’t a single market like many other areas. UF, FSU, and Miami absolutely dominate UCF, USF, FAU, and FIU. I’m not even sure it’s fair to include Miami with UF and FSU either.

I’ve never watched a UCF game in 14 years in Florida and I played college football.

UCF was D-2 until 1990 and then D-1AA after that. The Bug is buying high with them now after the best run in school history.

The market for UCF is just Orlando and it doesn’t even hold a majority there. Nobody cares about UCF in South Florida and Jacksonville and only a small % care in Tampa.

Sorry, you couldn't be anymore off base here... Whether you've ever watched a game or not is beyond irrelevant... UF and FSU are located in nowheres Florida and yet pull the highest rankings in any part of the state. Obviously they weren't going to jump to the B12 so, UCF was the next best logical target.

When you understand why the B10 wanted Rutgers then you'll understand the big picture.

Anything that makes Uconn fans unhappy for a day at least barring a tornado hitting their campus which Weathermannyc says he cant arrange makes me happy

You sound like a Gator or a Nole.

I understand why the Big Ten wanted Rutgers, though. It’s literally the only team in a 20 million person market. Whether someone like me has watched a UCF game is not irrelevant. I am literally the market they want to attract! I go to Gainesville and Tallahassee, I go to multiple Miami games. I’ve even been to a USF game (against Rutgers).

We’ll have to disagree then. I live in Florida. The UF, FSU, and Miami fans are completely obnoxious and everywhere. I’ve literally never heard a single proud UCF alum publicly boast about UCF. Not one. It’s considered a safety school like USF and it’s a commuter school.

I’d rather absolutely own the state of Arizona than get the DISTANT 4th place team from Florida. A team that has virtually no history and no chance for rivalries in the Big 12.

Also, UCF basketball doesn’t even compare to Arizona, ASU, or even Utah. They have only 5 NCAA tournament appearances and only 1 since 2005.

As far as Utah goes, from a TV perspective, they aren’t really enticing with BYU already in the conference.

Per Pete Thamel

Per @DanWetzel report on Big Ten expansion talks. Sources indicated earlier this week that Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti was doing due diligence on Oregon and Washington. Those have intensified in last recent days. But the key remains Big Ten doesn’t want to be predatory. Would only move if other dominoes fall in PAC-12.

LOL... They destroyed the Pac10 by taking USC and UCLA but now they have morals!!! Gotta love the hypocrisy with these 'institutions of higher learning'

The Big 10 doesn’t want to be predatory? Oh dear Lord their pomposity is endless.
